Английские власти в постреформационный период не добились искоренения католицизма в стране, и, судя по всему, не ставили перед собой такой цели, поскольку штрафы, уплачиваемые католиками, превратились в один из регулярных источников доходов для государственной казны. В то же время историки показали, что угроза конфискации части имущества но отношению к упорным католикам-рекузантам, штрафы, налагавшиеся за непосещение церкви, были эффективным средством воздействия на английское католическое сообщество, и власти держали английских католиков под контролем.

Протестанты в предреволюционные десятилетия XVII в., как установили современные британские историки, в страхе перед католицизмом преувеличили организованность, сплочённость и степень политической опасности католиков в Англии. Хотя в эти годы происходил рост численности католических священников, и у современников было ощущение увеличения численности приверженцев католицизма, руководители английского католического сообщества не стремились к политической деятельности, направленной против протестантского режима в Англии, поскольку были поглощены решением внутренних проблем, связанных с поддержанием существования католицизма в протестантской стране.

В настоящее время тенденцией в изучении английского католицизма является дальнейший анализ источников о деятельности католиков в отдельных местностях на территории Англии в XVI–XVII вв. и стремление выявить, наряду с социальными, также и личностные факторы, которые влияли на самоидентификацию человека с тем или иным религиозным направлением, существовавшим в этот период.
