«Stand back! Take your religion? With you as the best knight, what kind of religion can that be?»

As she spoke, Rebecca jumped up onto the window ledge and looked down into the courtyard far below.

"God has given me a way to escape from this!"

The Templar was not prepared for this at all and had no time to stop her.

He hesitated at first (он замешкался сперва; to hesitate – колебаться, сомневаться; не решаться), afraid that she might jump (опасаясь, что она может прыгнуть) if he came closer (если он подойдет ближе), but also because he admired (но также и потому, что он восхитился /тому/; to admire – восхищаться, восторгаться, любоваться) how bravely she had jumped up onto the ledge (как храбро она вскочила на подоконник).

"Come down (спускайся; to come down – спускаться, опускаться)," he said, "and I promise by the earth, the sea and the sky (и я обещаю = клянусь землей, морем и небом; to promise – обещать, давать обещание, обязательство), that I will not harm you (что я не причиню тебе вреда; to harm – вредить, причинять вред)."

He hesitated at first, afraid that she might jump if he came closer, but also because he admired how bravely she had jumped up onto the ledge.

"Come down," he said, "and I promise by the earth, the sea and the sky, that I will not harm you."

"I cannot trust you, Templar!"

"I promise by my sword (я обещаю = клянусь своим мечом), my name and my cross (своим именем и своим крестом), I will not harm a hair on your head (я не причиню вреда и волоску на твоей голове = ни один волос не упадет с твоей головы)! Rebecca stepped down off the window ledge (Ревекка спустилась: «сделала шаг вниз» с подоконника; to step – шагать, ступать), keeping her back to the window (продолжая стоять спиной к окну; to keep – держать; удерживать /прежнее положение/).

«I promise by my sword, my name and my cross, I will not harm a hair on your head! I have broken many laws, but never my word. If not yourself, then think of your father! He will need a powerful friend in this castle.»

"I will trust you – for now – but stay away from me."

Rebecca stepped down off the window ledge, keeping her back to the window.

"Let there be peace between us (пусть будет мир меж нас = помиримся)," said the Templar. "Don't be afraid (не бойся)."

"I don't need to be afraid (мне не нужно бояться), as long as I have this window behind me (пока у меня есть это окно за моей спиной; behind – сзади, позади)."

"You are being very unfair to me, Rebecca (ты очень несправедлива ко мне, Ревекка)," said the Templar. "Someone like you who is willing to die for her beliefs (кто-то, похожий на тебя, кто готов умереть за свою веру; willing – готовый, склонный, согласный /сделать что-либо/; belief – вера, доверие; рел. вера, верование) must have a proud and powerful soul, too (должен обладать гордой и сильной душой к тому же). «Let there be peace between us,» said the Templar. «Don't be afraid.»

"I don't need to be afraid, as long as I have this window behind me."

"You are being very unfair to me, Rebecca," said the Templar. "Someone like you who is willing to die for her beliefs must have a proud and powerful soul, too. We belong together! No, don't be afraid. It will only be if you agree, and on your own terms. I have my ambitions, and one day I may become the Grand Master of the Templars myself! Just think of what this could mean for us!"

"What are you saying (что вы говорите)?" Rebecca asked, confused (Ревекка спросила, смущенная; to confuse – смущать, приводить в замешательство). When the Templar left (когда рыцарь храма ушел), Rebecca knelt down on the floor (Ревекка опустилась на колени на пол; knee – колено; to knee – удариться коленом; становиться на колени) and thanked God for her life (и поблагодарила Бога за свою /спасенную/ жизнь).

«What are you saying?» Rebecca asked, confused. «Do you really think —» She was interrupted by the sound of the horn in the distance.

"I must go now, Rebecca," said the Templar. "The others may need me."

When the Templar left, Rebecca knelt down on the floor and thanked God for her life.

The Templar and De Bracy found each other in the tower corridor, and Front-de-Boeuf came running up from the dungeon below.

"Let us find out what this noise is all about," Front-de-Boeuf said.

"Here, I've been given this letter (вот, мне дали это письмо), but I can't read it (но я не могу прочитать его), because it is in Saxon (потому что оно на саксонском)." He looked at it, turning it round and round (он смотрел на него, поворачивая его вокруг и вокруг = вертя в руках), as if he hoped the meaning would become clearer this way (словно надеясь, что смысл станет понятнее от этого: «таким образом»; meaning – значение, смысл; clear – ясный, светлый; ясный, понятный). "It could be magic spells (это могут быть магические заклинания; spell – заклинание, заговор), for all I know (почем знать; for all I know – может быть, не исключено)," said De Bracy. "I never learned to read (и /так/ никогда и не выучился читать)."

"Give it to me (дайте его мне)," said the Templar.

"What does it say (что в нем говориться)?" asked De Bracy.

«Here, I've been given this letter, but I can't read it, because it is in Saxon.» He looked at it, turning it round and round, as if he hoped the meaning would become clearer this way. Finally he handed the letter to De Bracy.

"It could be magic spells, for all I know," said De Bracy. "I never learned to read."

"Give it to me," said the Templar.

"What does it say?" asked De Bracy.

The Templar translated the letter into French (тамплиер перевел письмо на французский), "I, Wamba, the son of Witless, jester of the noble Cedric of Rotherwood (я, Вамба, сын Безмозглого, шут благородного Седрика Ротервудского), known as the Saxon (известного под именем /Седрик/ Сакс; known as – известный под именем...), and I, Gurth, the son of Beowulph, the swineherd of Cedric (и я, Гурт, сын Беовульфа, свинопас Седрика), with the help of our allies (с помощью наших союзников), the good knight known as the Black Sluggard (доброго рыцаря, известного как Черный Бездельник) and the outlaw Locksley and his men (и разбойника Локсли и его людей), demand that our master Cedric the Saxon (требуем, чтобы наш хозяин, Седрик Сакс) and the Lady Rowena and Athelstane of Coningsburgh (и леди Ровена, и Ательстан Конингсбургский), and also the Jew, Isaac of York, together with his daughter, Rebecca (и также еврей, Исаак из Йорка, вместе со своей дочерью Ревеккой), and certain horses, mules and goods (и их лошади, мулы и имущество; certain – точный, определенный; goods – товар, товары; вещи, имущество), be delivered to us within an hour of receiving this letter (были доставлены нам в течение часа после получения этого письма; within – выражает временной предел: не позднее, в течение). The Templar translated the letter into French, «I, Wamba, the son of Witless, jester of the noble Cedric of Rotherwood, known as the Saxon, and I, Gurth, the son of Beowulph, the swineherd of Cedric, with the help of our allies, the good knight known as the Black Sluggard and the outlaw Locksley and his men, demand that our master Cedric the Saxon and the Lady Rowena and Athelstane of Coningsburgh, and also the Jew, Isaac of York, together with his daughter, Rebecca, and certain horses, mules and goods, be delivered to us within an hour of receiving this letter. If you fail to do this, we will attack and destroy your castle.»

At first the knights were lost for words (сперва рыцари не могли произнести ни слова: «на находили слов»; to lose – терять; затерять, не находить), but then De Bracy burst out laughing (но потом де Браси расхохотался; to burst – лопаться, взрываться; разражаться /гневом, слезами и т.п./; to burst out – вспыхивать /о войне, эпидемии и т.п./; начать внезапно или бурно /что-либо делать/). "These men would not have written so bravely (эти люди не стали бы писать так смело) if they did not have a lot of men to back them up (если бы у них не было много людей, поддерживающих их; to back up – поддерживать)," said Front-de-Boeuf. "There are a lot of outlaws out there in the forest (множество разбойников там, в лесу) who hate me (которые ненавидят меня). I've had as many arrows shot at me (в меня выпустили столько же стрел) as that target at Ashby (как в ту мишень в Эшби)!"

At first the knights were lost for words, but then De Bracy burst out laughing. The Templar joined in, but Front-de-Boeuf looked impatiently at them.

"These men would not have written so bravely if they did not have a lot of men to back them up," said Front-de-Boeuf. "There are a lot of outlaws out there in the forest who hate me. I've had as many arrows shot at me as that target at Ashby!"

He turned to one of his guards (он повернулся к одному из своих стражников). "Have you seen how many men are gathered out there (ты видел, сколько: «как много» людей собралось там, снаружи; to gather – собирать/ся/ /о людях, животных и т.д./)?"

"There are at least two hundred men."

"Let us attack them," said the Templar. "One knight is enough for twenty such men."

"Enough, and too much," said De Bracy. "I am almost ashamed to use my lance against them."

«Send for help from your allies,» said the Templar to Front-de-Boeuf.

"To whom should I write? All my allies are in York."

"Send a message to York," said De Bracy.

"And who shall carry the message? I know! Sir Templar, if you can write as well as you read, write a message to the outlaws for me."

"I would rather do it with my sword (я бы лучше написал его своим мечом) than with a pen (чем пером; pen – перо /писчее/, ручка с пером)," answered the Templar, "but I'll write it (но я напишу его) if that is what you wish (если вы этого хотите: «если это то, чего вы хотите»)." He sat down and wrote (он сел и написал), "Reginald Front-de-Boeuf, with his noble allies (Реджинальд Фронт-де-Бёф, со своими благородными союзниками), refuses to surrender to slaves (отказывается сдаться рабам). If the person calling himself the Black Knight is a real knight (если человек, называющий себя Черным рыцарем, настоящий рыцарь; person – человек; личность; real – реальный, реально существующий; подлинный, истинный, несомненный), then he should know (тогда ему следовало бы знать) he cannot demand this of good men of noble blood (что он не может требовать этого от добропорядочных людей благородной крови; good – хороший; достойный, добропорядочный, добродетельный; blood – кровь; происхождение, род). «I would rather do it with my sword than with a pen,» answered the Templar, «but I'll write it if that is what you wish.» He sat down and wrote, «Reginald Front-de-Boeuf, with his noble allies, refuses to surrender to slaves. If the person calling himself the Black Knight is a real knight, then he should know he cannot demand this of good men of noble blood. Instead, we ask for a man of God to be sent to the prisoners to hear their confessions. In the morning, we will execute them and place their heads on the castle walls.» The letter was then handed to the Saxon messenger waiting outside the gate.

In the forest outside Torquilstone (в лесу вокруг: «снаружи» Торкилстона), two hundred men were gathered already (двести человек уже собрались) and more were arriving every minute (и еще больше прибывало с каждой минутой). When Cedric's men at Rotherwood heard (когда слуги Седрика в Ротервуде узнали; man – человек; слуга) that their master had been taken prisoner by Front-de-Boeuf (что их хозяин был взят в плен Фрон-де-Бёфом), they came in large numbers (они пришли в огромном количестве; number – число; сумма, цифра; количество, число) and joined the outlaws outside Torquilstone (и присоединились к разбойникам вокруг: «снаружи» Торкилстона). The messenger passed through the growing crowd (гонец прошел сквозь растущую = все увеличивающуюся толпу; to grow – произрастать, расти; расти, увеличиваться) and gave the Templar's letter to Friar Tuck (и отдал письмо рыцаря храма брату Туку).

In the forest outside Torquilstone, two hundred men were gathered already and more were arriving every minute. When Cedric's men at Rotherwood heard that their master had been taken prisoner by Front-de-Boeuf, they came in large numbers and joined the outlaws outside Torquilstone. The messenger passed through the growing crowd and gave the Templar's letter to Friar Tuck.

"Why, this is in French (ба, да оно на французском)!" the monk exclaimed (монах воскликнул) and passed it on to the Black Knight (и передал его дальше, Черному рыцарю; to pass on – проходить дальше; передавать дальше), who translated it into Saxon for the rest of them (который перевел его на саксонский для остальных из них = для всех остальных).

"Execute the noble Cedric (казнить благородного Седрика)!" exclaimed Wamba (воскликнул Вамба), when the Black Knight had finished (когда Черный рыцарь закончил). "You must be mistaken, Sir Knight (вы, должно быть, ошиблись, сэр рыцарь; mistake – ошибка; заблуждение, недоразумение)."

"If there were someone among us (если бы был кто-то из нас; among – между, посреди; из числа, в числе) who could get into the castle (кто мог бы проникнуть в замок; to get into – войти, проникнуть куда-либо), he could find out how the castle is being defended (то он смог бы разузнать, как замок охраняется; to defend – защищать/ся/)," said the Knight. «Why, this is in French!» the monk exclaimed and passed it on to the Black Knight, who translated it into Saxon for the rest of them.

"Execute the noble Cedric!" exclaimed Wamba, when the Black Knight had finished. "You must be mistaken, Sir Knight."

"If there were someone among us who could get into the castle, he could find out how the castle is being defended," said the Knight. "I think, since they ask for a man of God, the monk should be sent in."

Friar Tuck refused loudly (брат Тук отказался громогласно).

"Is there no one here who will go (нет здесь никого, кто пойдет)?" asked the Black Knight.

Everyone looked at each other in silence (все смотрели друг на друга молча: «в тишине»; silence – тишина, безмолвие; молчание).

Friar Tuck refused loudly.

"Is there no one here who will go?" asked the Black Knight.

Everyone looked at each other in silence.

"I see," said Wamba, after a short pause. "The fool must be a fool and risk his neck when wise men refuse."

"Has he got enough sense to do this (у него достаточно ума, чтобы сделать это; sense – чувство, ощущение; ум, рассудок), do you think (как ты думаешь)?" the Black Knight asked Gurth.

"I don't know (я не знаю)," said Gurth. "But if he hasn't (но если /недостаточно/), then it will be the first time (тогда это будет первый раз) he has not been wise in his foolishness (когда он не был мудрым в своей глупости; foolishness – безрассудство, глупость)."

"Pax vobiscum (мир вам /лат./)" said Wamba, who was now wearing the monk's robe (сказал Вамба, который теперь был одет в монашеское одеяние), and he set off for the castle (и он отправился в замок).

"Pax vobiscum" said Wamba, who was now wearing the monk's robe, and he set off for the castle.
