He left the room to start preparing for the trial.

The trial of Rebecca began the next day at noon (суд над Ребеккой начался на следующий день в полдень) in the great hall of Templestowe (в большом зале /замка/ Темплстоу). The trial of Rebecca began the next day at noon in the great hall of Templestowe. As Rebecca was led through the crowd, she felt a piece of paper being pressed into her hand.

When everyone had taken their seats, the accusations against Rebecca were read out and the first witnesses were questioned. Albert de Malvoisin had worked very hard to find people who were willing to say they had seen Rebecca practise magic.

When the last witness had spoken, the Grand Master ordered Rebecca to take off her veil. It was not the custom for the daughters of her people, Rebecca explained, to uncover their faces in front of a crowd of strangers.

Bois-Guilbert's face seemed to show many different feelings at the same time, and for a moment he was unable to speak. Finally he looked at Rebecca and cried, «The paper! – the paper!»

"Yes," said Beaumanoir. "Here is the proof. The poor victim can only mention the piece of paper on which she has written her magic spells!"

But to Rebecca the Templar's words had a different meaning (но для Ревекки слова рыцаря храма имели другой смысл; different – непохожий, другой, отличный) and she looked down at the piece of paper in her hand (и она взглянула на клочок бумаги у себя в руке). But to Rebecca the Templar's words had a different meaning and she looked down at the piece of paper in her hand. On it was written, «Demand a champion!» in Arabic writing.

"Very well (очень хорошо)," replied the Grand Master. "Rebecca, if you fail to find a champion for yourself in time (Ревекка, если тебе не удастся найти себе защитника вовремя; to fail – недоставать, не хватать; не исполнить, не сделать), you will die the death of a witch (ты умрешь смертью ведьмы)!"

Rebecca didn't speak (Ревекка не говорила = молчала), but folded her hands and looked up to Heaven (но сложила /свои/ руки и подняла глаза к небу). Then she quickly wrote a message on a piece of paper (затем она быстро написала письмо на клочке бумаги) and handed it to one of the servants (и вручила его одному из слуг).

"Find Isaac of York as fast as you can (найди Исаака из Йорка так быстро, как только сможешь; fast – крепкий, твердый; быстрый, скорый) and give him this message (и отдайте ему это послание)!"

Rebecca didn't speak, but folded her hands and looked up to Heaven. Then she quickly wrote a message on a piece of paper and handed it to one of the servants. "Find Isaac of York as fast as you can and give him this message!"
