A large black flag was flying (большой черный флаг развевался; to fly – летать, пролетать; развевать/ся/) over the highest tower of the Castle of Coningsburgh (над самой высокой башней замка Конингсбург). Inside, everyone was busy (внутри все были заняты; busy – деятельный; занятой) with the funeral arrangements for Athelstane (приготовлениями погребения Ательстана; funeral – похоронный, погребальный; arrangement – приведение в порядок; мероприятие, приготовление). According to Saxon custom (по обычаю саксов), sheep and oxen were being roasted in the courtyard (бараны и быки жарились во внутреннем дворе замка; to roast – жарить /особ. на открытом огне/).

A large black flag was flying over the highest tower of the Castle of Coningsburgh. Inside, everyone was busy with the funeral arrangements for Athelstane. According to Saxon custom, sheep and oxen were being roasted in the courtyard.

While the crowd of funeral guests ate and drank (пока толпа поминающих: «похоронных гостей/гостей на похоронах» ела и пила; guest – гость, приглашенное лицо), jesters juggled (шуты показывали фокусы; to juggle – показывать фокусы; жонглировать) and priests read out prayers (а священники читали вслух молитвы). The King told Ivanhoe to keep himself hidden from his father (король приказал Айвенго скрываться от своего отца = не показываться своему отцу; to keep – держать, не отдавать; держаться, сохраняться; оставаться /в известном положении, состоянии и т.п./; to hide – прятать/ся/; скрывать/ся/) until he gave the signal (до тех пор, пока он не подаст ему знак). While the crowd of funeral guests ate and drank, jesters juggled and priests read out prayers. Gurth and Wamba quickly joined the guests in the courtyard, and King Richard and Ivanhoe went inside the tower. The King told Ivanhoe to keep himself hidden from his father until he gave the signal. Ivanhoe covered his face and stayed behind the King as they entered the main hall of the castle.

Here Cedric sat at the head of the table (здесь Седрик сидел во главе стола) together with members of other important Saxon families (вместе с членами других влиятельных саксонских семей; important – важный, значительный). When he saw the Black Knight enter (когда он увидел, что вошел Черный рыцарь), Cedric stood up (Седрик встал; to stand up – вставать), raised his cup (поднял свой кубок) and sadly greeted him (и печально поприветствовал его). Here Cedric sat at the head of the table together with members of other important Saxon families. When he saw the Black Knight enter, Cedric stood up, raised his cup and sadly greeted him. The Knight and Ivanhoe followed Cedric to a small chapel in the castle, where they prayed for the soul of Athelstane.

The Lady Rowena came in with some other guests (леди Ровена вошла /в часовню/ с несколькими другими гостями) and they sang a funeral song together (и они спели похоронную/траурную песню все вместе). The Lady Rowena came in with some other guests and they sang a funeral song together. Cedric whispered to the guests that Rowena had been the intended wife of Athelstane. The old Saxon was about to leave the chapel again, when the Black Knight took his hand.

"I would like to remind you (мне хотелось бы напомнить тебе; to remind – напоминать, походить; напоминать, делать напоминание)," the Knight said, "that when we parted (что когда мы расстались; to part – разделять, делить на части; расставаться), you promised me a favour (ты пообещал мне об одолжении)."

"Of course, noble Knight (конечно, благородный рыцарь)," said Cedric. "Yet, at this sad moment (и все же, в этот печальный момент) —"

"I'm afraid I don't have much time (я боюсь, что у меня немного времени). You have known me as the Black Knight (ты знал меня под именем Черного рыцаря)," said the Knight, taking off his helmet (сказал рыцарь, снимая свой шлем), "now you may know me as Richard (теперь ты можешь знать меня = узнай же меня под именем Ричарда)!"

«I would like to remind you,» the Knight said, «that when we parted, you promised me a favour.»

"Of course, noble Knight," said Cedric. "Yet, at this sad moment —"

"I'm afraid I don't have much time. You have known me as the Black Knight," said the Knight, taking off his helmet, "now you may know me as Richard!"

"King Richard (король Ричард)!" exclaimed Cedric, stepping back with surprise (воскликнул Седрик, отступая: «делая шаг» назад от удивления).

"Will you not kneel for your King (разве ты не преклонишь коленей перед твоим королем)?"

"I will never kneel for Norman blood (я никогда не преклоню коленей перед норманнской кровью)," said Cedric.

"Wait, then, until I have shown you (подожди, в таком случае, пока я не покажу = докажу тебе) that I will protect Normans and Saxons equally well (что я буду защищать норманнов и саксов одинаково хорошо)."

«King Richard!» exclaimed Cedric, stepping back with surprise.

"Will you not kneel for your King?"

"I will never kneel for Norman blood," said Cedric.

"Wait, then, until I have shown you that I will protect Normans and Saxons equally well."

"Well spoken, Sir King (хорошо сказано, сэр король)," said the old Saxon. "For I will admit you are king (так как я признаю, что вы король; to admit – допускать, соглашаться), even though I don't like it (даже если мне это не нравится)."

"And now for the favour (а теперь, что касается одолжения)," said the King. "I ask you to forgive this good knight, Wilfred of Ivanhoe (я прошу тебя простить этого доброго рыцаря, Уилфрида Айвенго). I have an interest in the happiness of my friend (я заинтересован в счастье своего друга; interest – заинтересованность, интерес), and in the friendship among my people (и в дружбе между моими подданными; people – народ, нация; любой вид подчиненных людей)."

«Well spoken, Sir King,» said the old Saxon. «For I will admit you are king, even though I don't like it.»

"And now for the favour," said the King. "I ask you to forgive this good knight, Wilfred of Ivanhoe. I have an interest in the happiness of my friend, and in the friendship among my people."

"My father (отец мой)! – my father!" cried Ivanhoe, throwing himself at Cedric's feet (вскричал Айвенго, бросаясь к ногам Седрика). "Please forgive me (пожалуйста, простите меня)!"

"You are forgiven, my son (ты прощен, сын мой)," said Cedric, helping him up (сказал Седрик, помогая ему подняться; to up – вставать, подниматься). «My father! – my father!» cried Ivanhoe, throwing himself at Cedric's feet. «Please forgive me!»

"You are forgiven, my son," said Cedric, helping him up. "I always keep my promise, even if it is to a Norman. You are about to speak," he added, seriously, to his son, "and I know what you are about to say, but the Lady Rowena must mourn for Athelstane for two years. The ghost of Athelstane himself would rise before us if we do not honour his memory!"

At Cedric's words, the doors flew open (при этих словах Седрика двери распахнулись; to fly – лететь), and Athelstane came in (и вошел Ательстан), looking like someone who had indeed risen from the dead (который выглядел так, словно он: «который выглядел как кто-то, кто» действительно поднялся из мертвых; to look – смотреть, глядеть; выглядеть, казаться)! Ivanhoe prayed (Айвенго /стал/ молиться), and the King cursed loudly (а король выругался громко; to curse – проклинать; ругаться).

"In the name of God (во имя Бога)," said Cedric, "if you are human, speak (если ты смертный /человек/, говори; human – людской, человеческий)! Alive or dead, noble Athelstane, speak to Cedric (живой или мертвый, благородный Ательстан, говори с Седриком)!"

At Cedric's words, the doors flew open, and Athelstane came in, looking like someone who had indeed risen from the dead! Cedric stared open-mouthed at the ghost. Ivanhoe prayed, and the King cursed loudly.

"In the name of God," said Cedric, "if you are human, speak! Alive or dead, noble Athelstane, speak to Cedric!"

"I will (я буду /говорить/)," said the ghost, very calmly (сказал призрак, очень спокойно). "Alive, did you say (живой, ты сказал)? I am as alive as someone (я настолько же живой, как кто-то) who has lived on bread and water for three days can be (кто прожил на хлебе и воде целых три дня и может быть /живым/). Yes, bread and water, Cedric (да, на хлебе и воде, Седрик)! Thank God that I am here to tell you about it (благодарение Богу, что я здесь /и могу/ рассказать тебе об этом)."

«I will,» said the ghost, very calmly. «Alive, did you say? I am as alive as someone who has lived on bread and water for three days can be. Yes, bread and water, Cedric! Thank God that I am here to tell you about it.»

"Why, noble Athelstane (как же, благородный Ательстан)," said the King, "I myself saw you struck down by the Templar (я сам видел, как ты был сражен ударом рыцаря храма; to strike down – сразить, свалить, повалить /ударом/) towards the end of the battle at Torquilstone (ближе к концу битвы в Торкилстоне; towards – зд. указывает на совершение действия к определенному моменту, числу около, к). Wamba said that your skull was split right down to the teeth (Вамба сказал, что твой череп был рассечен до самых зубов; to split – расщеплять, раскалывать)!"

«Why, noble Athelstane,» said the King, «I myself saw you struck down by the Templar towards the end of the battle at Torquilstone. Wamba said that your skull was split right down to the teeth!»

"Well, Wamba was lying, Sir Knight (что ж, Вамба лгал, сэр рыцарь; to lie – лгать, обманывать)," said Athelstane. "My teeth are fine (мои зубы в порядке; fine – тонкий, утонченный; хороший, прекрасный, хорошо себя чувствующий), and I intend to use them on my supper tonight (и я намереваюсь воспользоваться ими за ужином сегодня вечером). The Templar's sword had turned in his hand (меч у тамплиера повернулся в руке), and so he struck me with the flat side of his sword (и поэтому он ударил меня плоской стороной меча = плашмя; flat – плоский). «Well, Wamba was lying, Sir Knight,» said Athelstane. "My teeth are fine, and I intend to use them on my supper tonight. The Templar's sword had turned in his hand, and so he struck me with the flat side of his sword. As it was, down I went. I didn't recover my senses until I found myself lying in a coffin – an open one, by good luck!

"I sneezed several times (я чихнул несколько раз; to sneeze – чихать) and saw that I was in the local church (и увидел, что я нахожусь в местной церкви; local – местный /связанный с определенным местом/), not far from here (неподалеку отсюда). The priest came running (священник прибежал) when he heard me (когда он услышал меня). "I sneezed several times and saw that I was in the local church, not far from here. The priest came running when he heard me. He was not at all happy to discover that someone, from whom his church would inherit a lot of money, was not dead after all!

"I asked for some wine (я попросил немного вина), and he gave me a cup (и он дал мне чашу), but there must have been something else in it (но, должно быть, в ней было что-то еще), because I slept for hours afterwards (потому что я проспал несколько часов после этого). «I asked for some wine, and he gave me a cup, but there must have been something else in it, because I slept for hours afterwards. When I finally woke up again, my hands and feet were tied, and I was in some kind of dungeon under the church. The priest came and gave me only bread and water for three days!»

"But noble Athelstane (но благородный Ательстан)," said Cedric, grabbing the hand of his friend (сказал Седрик, хватая руку своего друга), "how did you escape (как же вы убежали)?"

"I would be there still (я бы был там до сих пор)," said Athelstane, "if the chains that I was tied with (если бы цепи, которыми я был связан) were not so rusty that I could break them (не оказались настолько ржавыми, что я смог порвать их). I dragged myself upstairs as best I could (я потащился наверх изо всех сил: «наилучшим образом, как только мог») and knocked the priest over the head (и ударил священника по голове; to knock – ударять, бить, колотить). I dragged myself upstairs as best I could and knocked the priest over the head. Then I grabbed some meat and wine and took the priest's best horse. I rode here as fast as I could. I only had a quick bite to eat before I came to find you, my noble friend!"

"And you have found me (и вы нашли меня)," said Cedric. "There has never been such a lucky day (никогда не было такого счастливого дня) for the Saxon people as today (для саксонского народа, как сегодня)!"

"I'm more interested in punishing that priest (я более заинтересован в наказании того священника)! He shall hang from the top of this castle (он должен висеть на /самой высокой башне/ этого замка; to hang – вешать, подвешивать; висеть; top – верхушка, вершина; шпиль, купол, шатер). Why, Front-de-Boeuf was burned alive for a much smaller matter (ба, да Фрон-де-Бёф был сожжен заживо за гораздо более мелкую проделку; matter – вещество; вопрос, дело)!

«And you have found me,» said Cedric. «There has never been such a lucky day for the Saxon people as today!»

"I'm more interested in punishing that priest! He shall hang from the top of this castle. Why, Front-de-Boeuf was burned alive for a much smaller matter!

"He at least fed his prisoners well (он, по меньшей мере, кормил своих пленников хорошо; to feed – кормить), only putting a little too much garlic in the food (только клал /слегка/ чересчур много чеснока в пищу; a little – немного, мало, чуточку). But this ungrateful priest (но этот неблагодарный священник; grateful – благодарный; признательный; ungrateful – неблагодарный), who has often eaten with me (который так часто ел со мной) at my table here in Coningsburgh (за моим столом здесь, в Конингсбурге), he only gave me bread and water (он давал мне только хлеб и воду) – and he will die for it (и он умрет за это)!"

«Noble Athelstane,» said Cedric, "forget such matters (забудьте об этом: «такие дела») and think of the future that lies ahead of you (и подумайте о том будущем, что открывается вам: «лежит перед вами»; to lie – лежать; простираться; ahead – вперед; впереди)! «Noble Athelstane,» said Cedric, «forget such matters and think of the future that lies ahead of you! Tell this Norman King that even though he may be lion-hearted, he cannot claim the throne of England as long as a true Saxon king is here to fight for it!»

"How (как)!" exclaimed Athelstane. "Is this the noble King Richard (это благородный король Ричард)?"

"Yes, it is Richard himself (да, это Ричард собственной персоной)," replied Cedric. "But let me remind you (но позвольте мне напомнить вам) that since he came here as a guest of his own free will (что раз он приехал сюда как гость, и по доброй воле; of one's own free will – добровольно, по доброй воле), he may not be harmed or taken prisoner (ему нельзя причинить вреда или взять пленником). Think of your duty as a host (подумайте о своем долге хозяина /перед гостем/; duty – почтение, уважение; долг, обязательство; host – хозяин, человек, принимающий гостей)."

"Yes, it is Richard himself," replied Cedric. "But let me remind you that since he came here as a guest of his own free will, he may not be harmed or taken prisoner. Think of your duty as a host."

«Yes,» said Athelstane, "and my duty as an Englishman (и о моем долге англичанина)! I promise to be loyal to you, Richard (я обещаю быть верным тебе, Ричард; loyal – верный, преданный)!"

"Think of the freedom of England (подумайте о свободе Англии; freedom – независимость, самостоятельность, свобода)!" exclaimed Cedric.

"Bread and water in a dungeon (хлеб и вода в темнице) do wonderful things to a man's ambition (делают удивительные вещи с честолюбивыми замыслами человека)! I rise out of the grave a wiser man (я восстал из могилы куда более мудрым человеком; to rise – подниматься, вставать на ноги; воскресать, оживать) than I was when I went into it (чем я был, когда вошел = попал в нее). I have no interest (мне не интересно: «у меня нет никой заинтересованности») in being king anywhere else than here (быть королем где бы то ни было еще, кроме как здесь), on my own land (на моей собственной земле). «Yes,» said Athelstane, «and my duty as an Englishman! I promise to be loyal to you, Richard!»

"Think of the freedom of England!" exclaimed Cedric.

"Bread and water in a dungeon do wonderful things to a man's ambition! I rise out of the grave a wiser man than I was when I went into it. I have no interest in being king anywhere else than here, on my own land. And my first act as king will be to hang that priest."

"And my ward, Rowena (а моя воспитанница, Ровена)," said Cedric, "you don't intend to leave her as well (вы же не собираетесь оставить и ее также)?"

«Cedric,» said Athelstane, "be reasonable (будьте благоразумны; reasonable – обладающий разумом; разумный, благоразумный). The Lady Rowena does not care for me (леди Ровена не любит меня; to care – заботиться; любить, питать интерес). She loves the little finger of Wilfred more (она любит мизинец: «маленький палец» Уилфрида больше) than my whole person (чем меня целиком: «чем мою всю персону»).

"Cedric," said Athelstane, "be reasonable. The Lady Rowena does not care for me. She loves the little finger of Wilfred more than my whole person.

"There, she can tell you herself (вот же, она может сказать вам сама). No, don't blush, Rowena (нет, не краснейте, Ровена). Give me your hand instead (дайте мне вашу руку /вместо этого/). Everyone looked for Ivanhoe (все разыскивали Айвенго; to look for – искать), but he was gone (но он исчез; gone – пропащий, потерянный). They discovered (они обнаружили = выяснили) that an old Jew had come to Coningsburgh asking for Ivanhoe (что какой-то старый еврей пришел в Конингсбург и спрашивал Айвенго). After speaking briefly to the old man (после того, как /он/ недолго поговорил со стариком; briefly – кратко, сжато), Ivanhoe had left the castle in a great hurry together with Gurth (Айвенго покинул замок в большой спешке вместе с Гуртом; hurry – суматоха, суета; спешка, поспешность).

Everyone looked for Ivanhoe, but he was gone. They discovered that an old Jew had come to Coningsburgh asking for Ivanhoe. After speaking briefly to the old man, Ivanhoe had left the castle in a great hurry together with Gurth.

"Beautiful Rowena," said Athelstane, "I'm sure Ivanhoe had a very good reason to disappear like that —"

But Rowena, who had found the whole situation very embarrassing (но Ровена, которая сочла всю эту ситуацию очень неловкой; to find – находить, обнаруживать; считать, полагать, признавать; to embarrass – беспокоить, смущать, сбивать с толку), had left the room as well (также покинула комнату).
