Meanwhile, the mysterious attackers (тем временем таинственные разбойники: «напавшие»; attack – нападение; to attack – нападать, атаковать) were taking their prisoners through the forest (вели своих пленников через лес; to take /smb. to a place/ – отвозить, отводить /кого-либо куда-либо/). Meanwhile, the mysterious attackers were taking their prisoners through the forest. They did not know the way through the forest very well, and they got lost several times. As the sun rose, the two leaders of the attackers discussed their plans.

"Now you should leave us, Sir Maurice," the Templar said to De Bracy. "Then you can come back for the second part of your plan and rescue Rowena from her 'attackers'."

"I've changed my mind (я передумал; to change – менять, изменять; mind – ум, разум; намерение, желание; to change one’s mind – передумать, изменить свое решение). I won't leave you (я не оставлю вас) until I have arrived at Torquilstone together with my prize (до тех пор, пока я не приеду в Торкилстон вместе со своим трофеем; prize – награда, премия; приз, трофей)," answered De Bracy. "You mean the beautiful Jewess! I would have thought you were more interested in the old man's money than in his daughter."

"Well, I like both (что ж, мне нравится и то и другое). But the old Jew is only half a prize (но старый еврей – это только половина трофея). Soon they reached Torquilstone, the castle of Front-de-Boeuf. The castle was surrounded by a deep moat, which could only be crossed by passing through a barbican and going across a drawbridge.

As the Norman knights came closer with their prisoners (когда рыцари-норманны подошли поближе /к замку/ со своими пленниками), the drawbridge was lowered (подъемный мост был опущен), and they rode into the courtyard of the castle (и они въехали /верхом/ во внутренний двор замка). As the Norman knights came closer with their prisoners, the drawbridge was lowered, and they rode into the courtyard of the castle. Here, the prisoners were separated and taken to different parts of the castle. Isaac begged the guards to let his daughter go, but instead they took Rebecca away, and dragged Isaac down to the dungeon.

"I hope they won't forget (я надеюсь, они не забудут) to send us some food and some wine (прислать нам немного еды и вина; to send – посылать, отправлять)," said Athelstane when he and Cedric were alone (сказал Ательстан, когда он и Седрик оказались одни; alone – в одиночестве, наедине) in one of the halls of Torquilstone (в одном из залов Торкилстона). When a guard came with some food at last, Athelstane threw himself on it. With his mouth full of food, he told the guard to let Front-de-Boeuf know that he challenged him to fight anywhere, anytime. «I would fight a dozen men like Front-de-Boeuf,» Athelstane added to Cedric, «if it would get me out of a prison where they put so much garlic in their food!»

At that moment, they heard the sound of a horn in the distance (в этот момент они услышали звук /охотничьего/ рожка вдалеке; horn – рог; рожок, рог, духовой инструмент; distance – расстояние; отдаленность, даль). Cedric and Athelstane rushed to the window (Седрик и Ательстан бросились к окну), but all they could see was the courtyard of the castle (но все, что они смогли увидеть, был внутренний двор замка).

At that moment, they heard the sound of a horn in the distance. Cedric and Athelstane rushed to the window, but all they could see was the courtyard of the castle.

In the meantime, Isaac of York was down in the dark dungeon of Torquilstone. It was very cold and damp, because the dungeon was deeper than even the moat itself. There were only two small holes at the top of the wall for air and light.

Isaac could see a small fire burning in the far corner and some rusty chains attached to the dungeon wall next to him. In the dim light, he could see that there were two human legbones still in the chains. He sat down in a corner, folded his hands and waited.

Three hours later, he heard heavy footsteps outside the door. When he saw the large figure of Front-de-Boeuf standing in the doorway in front of him, Isaac started to shake with terror.

"Have mercy on me, noble knight (пощадите меня, благородный рыцарь; mercy – милосердие, сострадание; to have mercy on smb. – щадить кого-либо, сжалиться над кем-либо)!" exclaimed Isaac (воскликнул Исаак). "I am old and poor and helpless (я стар, и беден, и беспомощен)."

«I want a thousand pounds of silver,» Front-de-Boeuf said with a deep voice. Slowly, the Knight came closer to the old man, and threw a scale at his feet. «Otherwise you will never be released from my dungeon.»

"Have mercy on me, noble knight!" exclaimed Isaac. "I am old and poor and helpless."

"You may be old (ты, может быть, и стар), but everyone knows that you are rich (но каждый знает, что ты богат)! Prisoners who were ten thousand times more important than you (пленники, которые были в десять тысяч раз важнее, чем ты; important – важный, значительный, существенный) have died here in this dungeon (умерли здесь, в этом подземелье). «You may be old, but everyone knows that you are rich! Prisoners who were ten thousand times more important than you have died here in this dungeon. Can you see those iron bars over the fire in that corner? If you refuse to bring me the money, the guards will make you lie down on them as if it were a bed!»

Isaac looked over at the fire (Исаак взглянул на огонь) and back at the Norman knight (и затем снова на рыцаря-норманна).

"That is impossible (это невозможно)! The good God never made a heart so cruel (милосердный Бог никогда не создавал сердца настолько жестокого; good – хороший)!"

"Don't be so sure, Isaac (не будь столь уверен, Исаак)," said the Norman with a cold smile (сказал норманн с холодной улыбкой; cold – холодный; неприветливый, равнодушный). "Guards (охрана)! Grab him (схватить его)!"

Front-de-Boeuf's guards came in (стражники Фрон-де-Бёфа вошли) and started to drag Isaac towards the fire (и начали тащить = и потащили Исаака к огню).

Isaac looked over at the fire and back at the Norman knight. «That is impossible! The good God never made a heart so cruel!»

"Don't be so sure, Isaac," said the Norman with a cold smile. "Guards! Grab him!"

Front-de-Boeuf's guards came in and started to drag Isaac towards the fire.

"I will pay (я заплачу)!" cried Isaac (закричал Исаак). "I will pay! I'll go and get the money in York (я пойду и возьму деньги в Йорке), but let the other prisoners go first (но отпусти других пленников сначала; to let go – выпускать из рук; отпускать, освобождать)."

«No.»

"Can I at least take my wounded friend with me (могу ли я, по меньшей мере, взять своего раненого друга с собой)?"

«No, Jew.»

"Let my daughter go to York for me, then (позвольте моей дочери поехать в Йорк вместо меня, в таком случае)."

"Can I at least take my wounded friend with me?"

"Let my daughter go to York for me, then."

"Your daughter?" asked Front-de-Boeuf, surprised. "I wish I had known before that she was your daughter! I've already given her to the Templar."

Isaac cried out so loudly (Исаак закричал так громко) that the guards let go of him in surprise (что охранники выпустили его /из рук/ от удивления; surprise – удивление, изумление). Dropping to the ground (повалившись на пол; to drop – капать, стекать каплями; падать, опускаться), Isaac grabbed the knees of Front-de-Boeuf (Исаак обхватил колени Фрон-де-Бёфа; to grab – хватать).

"Take what you asked for (возьмите то, чего вы потребовали; to ask for – просить, требовать) – take ten times more (возьмите в десять раз больше) — but let me keep my daughter (но оставьте мне мою дочь; to keep – держать, иметь, хранить; беречь, оставлять)! I will not pay anything (я не заплачу ничего) unless my daughter is safe (пока моя дочь не будет в безопасности)!"

Isaac cried out so loudly that the guards let go of him in surprise. Dropping to the ground, Isaac grabbed the knees of Front-de-Boeuf.

"Take what you asked for – take ten times more – but let me keep my daughter! I will not pay anything unless my daughter is safe!"

"Are you mad (ты сошел с ума)? Aren't you afraid of the fire (разве ты не боишься огня)?" Front-de-Boeuf gave his men the signal (Фрон-де-Бёф подал своим людям знак) to put Isaac on the red-hot iron bars (положить Исаака на раскаленную докрасна железную решетку; red – красный; hot – горячий, жаркий; red-hot – раскаленный докрасна). Just at that moment (как раз в этот момент), they heard the sound of the horn in the distance (они услышали звук рожка вдалеке). Voices from above called for Front-de-Boeuf (голоса /откуда-то/ сверху позвали Фрон-де-Бёфа; to call – кричать, окликать; звать, вызывать), and the Knight told his guards to let go of Isaac (и рыцарь приказал своим стражникам отпустить Исаака; to tell – рассказывать; велеть, приказывать) and follow him upstairs (и следовать за ним наверх /по лестнице/).

«Are you mad? Aren't you afraid of the fire?» Front-de-Boeuf gave his men the signal to put Isaac on the red-hot iron bars. Just at that moment, they heard the sound of the horn in the distance. Voices from above called for Front-de-Boeuf, and the Knight told his guards to let go of Isaac and follow him upstairs.

At the same time, De Bracy had entered the room (в то же самое время де Браси вошел в комнату) where the Lady Rowena had been taken (в которую леди Ровена была приведена). At the same time, De Bracy had entered the room where the Lady Rowena had been taken. He greeted Rowena by taking off his gloves and large green hat and asked her to sit down beside him.

"If I am your prisoner, Sir Knight, I prefer to stand up," answered Rowena.

"Beautiful Rowena (прекрасная Ровена)! You are not my prisoner (вы не моя пленница) — I am your prisoner (я – ваш пленник)! I have chosen you to be the queen of my heart (я избрал вас /быть/ королевой моего сердца; to choose – выбирать; избирать). "When I get married – should that day ever arrive – it will be to someone who does not hate the Saxon people like you do."

"I know what you're thinking, Rowena (я знаю, что ты думаешь, Ровена). «I know what you're thinking, Rowena. Don't dream that Richard the Lionhearted will ever return, or that Ivanhoe will marry you instead! Ivanhoe is here in the castle, in my power.»

"Wilfred, here? I don't believe you."

"Then save him, for the love of Heaven!" Rowena threw her hands up and started crying.
