“What am I to do?” he said sullenly.

“What am I to do?” asked the Invisible Man. “You will get help. The only thing is for you to go back.”

“I will try. If he lets me in will you promise not to rush the door?”

“I’ve got no quarrel with you,” said the Voice.

Kemp had hurried upstairs after letting Adye out (Кемп поспешил наверх, после того как выпустил Эдая), and now crouching among the broken glass (и теперь, притаившись среди битого стекла) and peering cautiously over the edge of the study window sill (и осторожно выглядывая в окно кабинета), he saw Adye stand parleying with the Unseen (он увидел, как Эдай стоит и разговаривает с Невидимкой; to parley – обсуждать, договариваться, вести переговоры).

“Why doesn’t he fire (почему он не стреляет)?” whispered Kemp to himself (шепотом спросил себя Кемп). Then the revolver moved a little (тут револьвер немного переместился) and the glint of the sunlight flashed in Kemp’s eyes (и отраженный солнечный свет сверкнул Кемпу в глаза; toglint– вспыхивать, сверкать; отражать свет). He shaded his eyes and tried to see the source of the blinding beam

“Surely (так и есть; surely – конечно, несомненно)!” he said, “Adye has given up the revolver (Эдай отдал револьвер).”

“Promise not to rush the door (обещайте не врываться за вной),” Adye was saying (говорил Эдай). “Don’t push a winning game too far (не заводите выигрышное дело слишком далеко = не увлекайтесь своей удачей). Give a man a chance (дайте человеку шанс).”

Kemp had hurried upstairs after letting Adye out, and now crouching among the broken glass and peering cautiously over the edge of the study window sill, he saw Adye stand parleying with the Unseen.

“Why doesn’t he fire?” whispered Kemp to himself. Then the revolver moved a little and the glint of the sunlight flashed in Kemp’s eyes. He shaded his eyes and tried to see the source of the blinding beam.

“Surely!” he said, “Adye has given up the revolver.”

“Promise not to rush the door,” Adye was saying. “Don’t push a winning game too far. Give a man a chance.”

“You go back to the house (возвращайтесь в дом). I tell you flatly I will not promise anything (говорю вам прямо: я ничего не обещаю; flatly– категорически, решительно, прямо, откровенно; flat– плоский).”

Adye’s decision seemed suddenly made He turned towards the house, walking slowly with his hands behind him Kemp watched him – puzzled The revolver vanished, flashed again into sight, vanished again (револьвер исчез, снова сверкнул, опять исчез), and became evident on a closer scrutiny as a little dark object following Adye (и стал видимым для более пристального взгляда как маленький темный предмет, следовавший за Эдаем; scrutiny– внимательный осмотр; наблюдение; внимательный, испытующий взгляд). Then things happened very quickly Adye leapt backwards, swung around (Эдай отпрыгнул назад, развернулся; toleap; toswing), clutched at this little object, missed it (/попытался/ схватить этот маленький предмет, промахнулся), threw up his hands and fell forward on his face (вскинул руки и упал лицом вниз/ничком), leaving a little puff of blue in the air (а в воздухе осталось маленькое синее облачко; puff– дуновение /ветра/; дым, дымок; клуб, облако /дыма, пара/). Kemp did not hear the sound of the shot Adye writhed, raised himself on one arm, fell forward, and lay still

“You go back to the house. I tell you flatly I will not promise anything.”

Adye’s decision seemed suddenly made. He turned towards the house, walking slowly with his hands behind him. Kemp watched him – puzzled. The revolver vanished, flashed again into sight, vanished again, and became evident on a closer scrutiny as a little dark object following Adye. Then things happened very quickly. Adye leapt backwards, swung around, clutched at this little object, missed it, threw up his hands and fell forward on his face, leaving a little puff of blue in the air. Kemp did not hear the sound of the shot. Adye writhed, raised himself on one arm, fell forward, and lay still.

For a space Kemp remained staring at the quiet carelessness of Adye’s attitude The afternoon was very hot and still (день был очень жаркий и безветренный), nothing seemed stirring in all the world (казалось, ничто не движется: «не шевелится» во всем мире = весьмирзамер) save a couple of yellow butterflies chasing each other through the shrubbery between the house and the road gate (только две желтые бабочки гонялись друг за другом в кустах между домом и калиткой; shrubbery – кустарник; аллея, обсаженнаякустарником). Adye lay on the lawn near the gate The blinds of all the villas down the hill-road were drawn (шторы во всех домах на холме были спущены), but in one little green summer-house was a white figure (но в одной маленькой зеленой беседке виднелась белая фигура), apparently an old man asleep (по-видимому, спавшего старика). Kemp scrutinised the surroundings of the house for a glimpse of the revolver, but it had vanished (Кемп внимательно всматривался в прилегающую к дому территорию, пытаясь разглядеть револьвер, но он исчез; surroundings – окрестности, среда, окружение; glimpse – мелькание, проблеск; быстрый взгляд: to have/catch a glimpse of – увидеть мельком). His eyes came back to Adye The game was opening well

Then came a ringing and knocking at the front door, that grew at last tumultuous (тут во входную дверь начали звонить и стучать, и наконец эти звуки стали очень яростными и настойчивыми; tumultuous – шумный, буйный, бурный; возбужденный), but pursuant to Kemp’s instructions the servants had locked themselves into their rooms (но в соответствии с распоряжениями Кемпа слуги заперлись по своим комнатам). This was followed by a silence

For a space Kemp remained staring at the quiet carelessness of Adye’s attitude. The afternoon was very hot and still, nothing seemed stirring in all the world save a couple of yellow butterflies chasing each other through the shrubbery between the house and the road gate. Adye lay on the lawn near the gate. The blinds of all the villas down the hill-road were drawn, but in one little green summer-house was a white figure, apparently an old man asleep. Kemp scrutinised the surroundings of the house for a glimpse of the revolver, but it had vanished. His eyes came back to Adye. The game was opening well.

Then came a ringing and knocking at the front door, that grew at last tumultuous, but pursuant to Kemp’s instructions the servants had locked themselves into their rooms. This was followed by a silence.

Kemp sat listening and then began peering cautiously out of the three windows (Кемп посидел, прислушиваясь, потом начал осторожно выглядывать в окна), one after another (в одно за другим, в каждое из трех). He went to the staircase head and stood listening uneasily He armed himself with his bedroom poker (он вооружился кочергой из спальни), and went to examine the interior fastenings of the ground-floor windows again (и снова отправился проверять внутренние запоры окон первого этажа). Everything was safe and quiet He returned to the belvedere Adye lay motionless over the edge of the gravel just as he had fallen Coming along the road by the villas were the housemaid and two policemen

Everything was deadly still The three people seemed very slow in approaching He wondered what his antagonist was doing

Kemp sat listening and then began peering cautiously out of the three windows, one after another. He went to the staircase head and stood listening uneasily. He armed himself with his bedroom poker, and went to examine the interior fastenings of the ground-floor windows again. Everything was safe and quiet. He returned to the belvedere. Adye lay motionless over the edge of the gravel just as he had fallen. Coming along the road by the villas were the housemaid and two policemen.

Everything was deadly still. The three people seemed very slow in approaching. He wondered what his antagonist was doing.

He started (Кемп вздрогнул). There was a smash from below He hesitated and went downstairs again Suddenly the house resounded with heavy blows and the splintering of wood He heard a smash and the destructive clang of the iron fastenings of the shutters He turned the key and opened the kitchen door As he did so, the shutters, split and splintering, came flying inward He stood aghast (он остановился, объятый ужасом).

The window frame, save for one crossbar, was still intact (оконная рама, кроме одной перекладины, по-прежнему была целой), but only little teeth of glass remained in the frame (но в ней остались лишь зубцы стекла). The shutters had been driven in with an axe (ставни были разрублены топором; to drive in – вгонять, вбивать), and now the axe was descending in sweeping blows upon the window frame (и теперь топор со всего размаху ударял по оконной раме: «опускался размашистыми ударами на раму») and the iron bars defending it (и железной решетке, защищавшей окно). Then suddenly it leapt aside and vanished He saw the revolver lying on the path outside (Кемп увидел револьвер, лежавший на дорожке во дворе), and then the little weapon sprang into the air (и тут это маленькое оружие подскочило в воздух). He dodged back (Кемп отпрыгнул назад). The revolver cracked just too late (револьвер выстрелил лишь на миг позднее), and a splinter from the edge of the closing door flashed over his head (и щепка от края закрывающейся двери пролетела над головой Кемпа). He slammed and locked the door (он захлопнул дверь и запер ее /на ключ/), and as he stood outside he heard Griffin shouting and laughing (и, стоя за ней, услышал, как Гриффин закричал и засмеялся). Then the blows of the axe with its splitting and smashing consequences, were resumed

Kemp stood in the passage trying to think In a moment the Invisible Man would be in the kitchen This door would not keep him a moment, and then —

A ringing came at the front door again It would be the policemen He ran into the hall, put up the chain, and drew the bolts He made the girl speak before he dropped the chain (он заставил горничную говорить, до того, как снял цепь = окликнулгорничнуюи, услышавееголос, снялцепь), and the three people blundered into the house in a heap (и все трое кучей ввалились в дом), and Kemp slammed the door again (и Кемп снова захлопнул дверь).

“The Invisible Man!” said Kemp. “He has a revolver, with two shots – left (у него револьвер, осталось два заряда). He’s killed Adye (он убил Эдая). Shot him anyhow (во всяком случае, подстрелил его). Didn’t you see him on the lawn (вы не видели его на лужайке)? He’s lying there (он там лежит).”

“Who (кто)?” said one of the policemen (спросил один из полисменов).

“Adye,” said Kemp.

“We came in the back way (мы прошли окольным путем),” said the girl.

“What’s that smashing (что это за шум)?” asked one of the policemen.

“He’s in the kitchen – or will be (он в кухне… или будет там /скоро/). He has found an axe – (он нашел топор…)”

Suddenly the house was full of the Invisible Man’s resounding blows on the kitchen door The girl stared towards the kitchen, shuddered (служанка взглянула в сторону кухни, вздрогнула), and retreated into the dining-room (и попятилась в столовую; to retreat – отступать, отходить; удаляться). Kemp tried to explain in broken sentences They heard the kitchen door give

Suddenly the house was full of the Invisible Man’s resounding blows on the kitchen door. The girl stared towards the kitchen, shuddered, and retreated into the dining-room. Kemp tried to explain in broken sentences. They heard the kitchen door give.

“This way (сюда),” said Kemp, starting into activity (сказал Кемп, начиная действовать), and bundled the policemen into the dining-room doorway (и втолкнул полисменов в столовую; to bundle – связыватьвузел; запихивать; спроваживать; bundle – узел).

“Poker (кочерга),” said Kemp, and rushed to the fender (крикнул он и бросился к каминной решетке). He handed the poker he had carried to the policeman and the dining-room one to the other He suddenly flung himself backward

“Whup!” said one policeman, ducked («Оп!», сказал один полисмен, пригибаясь), and caught the axe on his poker (и поймал топор кочергой). The pistol snapped its penultimate shot and ripped a valuable Sidney Cooper (револьвер выпустил предпоследний заряд и пробил ценное /полотно/ Сиднея Купера; to rip – рвать/ся/, распарывать/ся/; Sidney Cooper – СиднейКупер/1803 – 1902/, английскийхудожник). The second policeman brought his poker down on the little weapon (второй полисмен ударил своей кочергой по маленькому оружию; to bring down – свалить, сломать; сбить), as one might knock down a wasp (как бьют, чтобы убить осу = будтохотелприбитьосу; to knock – ударять/ся/, стучать/ся/; сбивать), and sent it rattling to the floor (и револьвер со стуком упал на пол: «и послал его стучащим на пол»; rattle – треск, грохот; дребезжание; стук).

At the first clash the girl screamed (при первом ударе служанка вскрикнула), stood screaming for a moment by the fireplace (постояла, крича, с минуту у камина), and then ran to open the shutters (а потом побежала открывать ставни) – possibly with an idea of escaping by the shattered window (возможно, думая спастись через разбитое окно).

The axe receded into the passage (топор отступил в коридор), and fell to a position about two feet from the ground (и занял положение = остановился примерно в двух футах от пола). They could hear the Invisible Man breathing

“Stand away, you two (вы двое, отойдите; to stand away – отступать, держаться сзади),” he said. “I want that man Kemp (мне нужен Кемп).”

“We want you (а нам нужны вы),” said the first policeman, making a quick step forward (сказал первый полисмен, делая быстрый шаг вперед) and wiping with his poker at the Voice (и ударяя с размаху в направлении Голоса). The Invisible Man must have started back (Невидимка, должно быть, отскочил назад), and he blundered into the umbrella stand (и полисмен попал в подставку для зонтов).

Then, as the policeman staggered with the swing of the blow he had aimed (затем, когда полисмен зашатался от замаха /кочергой/; to aim a blow – замахиваться), the Invisible Man countered with the axe (Невидимка нанес встречный удар топором), the helmet crumpled like paper (каска смялась, как бумага = словноонабылаизбумаги; helmet – шлем, каска), and the blow sent the man spinning to the floor at the head of the kitchen stairs (и от этого удара полисмен полетел кубарем по полу до кухонной лестницы; to spin – крутить/ся/, вертеть/ся/). But the second policeman, aiming behind the axe with his poker (но второй полисмен, ударив кочергой /по месту/ за топором), hit something soft that snapped (попал по чему-то мягкому; to hit – ударять, поражать, попадатьвцель). There was a sharp exclamation of pain (раздался резкий крик боли) and then the axe fell to the ground (и топор упал на пол). The policeman wiped again at vacancy and hit nothing (полисмен снова ударил в пустоту, но ни во что не попал); he put his foot on the axe, and struck again (он наступил на топор и ударил еще раз). Then he stood, poker clubbed (потом поднялся, держа кочергу /наготове/, как дубинку), listening intent for the slightest movement (и стал внимательно прислушиваться к малейшим движениям).

He heard the dining-room window open (он услышал, как открылось окно в столовой), and a quick rush of feet within (и быстрые шаги = кто-тобыстробросилсявнего; within – внутри). His companion rolled over and sat up (его товарищ перевернулся и сел), with the blood running down between his eye and ear (между глазом и ухом /по щеке/ у него текла кровь).

“Where is he (где он)?” asked the man on the floor (спросил полисмен, сидевший на полу).
