“I’m dashed!” he said. “If this don’t beat cock-fighting! Most remarkable! – And there I can see a rabbit clean through you, ’arf a mile away! Not a bit of you visible – except – ”

He scrutinised the apparently empty space keenly (он стал внимательно всматриваться в казавшееся пустым пространство; keen – острый; проницательный; интенсивный, сильный).

“You ’aven’t been eatin’ bread and cheese (не ели ли вы хлеб и сыр; ’aven’t been eatin’ = haven’t been eating)?” he asked, holding the invisible arm (спросил он, держа невидимую руку).

“You’re quite right (ты совершенно прав), and it’s not quite assimilated into the system (они еще не полностью усвоились организмом; to assimilate – поглощать; усваивать, впитывать /пищу, информацию/; system – система, устройство; организм).”

“Ah!” said Mr. Marvel. “Sort of ghostly, though (все-таки жутковатая штука; ghostly – похожийнапривидение; призрачный; относящийсякпривидениям).”

“Of course, all this isn’t half so wonderful as you think (конечно, все это и наполовину не так удивительно, как ты думаешь = далеко не так странно, как вам кажется).”

“You’re quite right, and it’s not quite assimilated into the system.”

“Ah!” said Mr. Marvel. “Sort of ghostly, though.”

“Of course, all this isn’t half so wonderful as you think.”

“It’s quite wonderful enough for my modest wants (это достаточно удивительно для моего скромного ума; wants – желание, потребность),” said Mr. Thomas Marvel. “Howjer manage it (как это вам удается; howjer = how do you)! “It’s too long a story (это слишком долгая история). And besides – (и, кроме того…)”

“I tell you, the whole business fairly beats me (все это дело выше моего понимания, скажу я вам = это кажется мне совершенно невероятным; fairly– в некоторой степени, довольно; совершенно),” said Mr. Marvel.

“What I want to say at present is this (вот что я хочу сказать сейчас): I need help (мне нужна помощь). I have come to that (я пришел за ней) – I came upon you suddenly (я наткнулся на тебя неожиданно). I was wandering, mad with rage (я брел, обезумев от ярости), naked, impotent (голый, обессиленный; impotent – бессильный, слабый; беспомощный). “Lord (Господи)!” said Mr. Marvel.

“It’s too long a story. And besides – ”

“I tell you, the whole business fairly beats me,” said Mr. Marvel.

“What I want to say at present is this: I need help. I have come to that – I came upon you suddenly. I was wandering, mad with rage, naked, impotent. I could have murdered. And I saw you – ”

“Lord!” said Mr. Marvel.

“I came up behind you – hesitated – went on – (я подошел к тебе сзади, подумал и пошел дальше…; to hesitate – колебаться, сомневаться; задумываться)”

Mr. Marvel’s expression was eloquent (лицо мистера Марвела красноречиво выражало его чувства; eloquent – красноречивый; выразительный).

“– then stopped (…потом остановился). ‘Here (вот),’ I said, ‘is an outcast like myself (отверженный, как и я). This is the man for me (вот человек, который мне нужен).’ So I turned back and came to you – you (поэтому я вернулся и подошел к тебе). And – ”

“Lord!” said Mr. Marvel. “But I’m all in a tizzy (я так волнуюсь; tizzy – волнение, тревога/особеннопопустякам/: in a tizzy – нервный, волнующийся). May I ask – How is it (позвольте спросить – как же это так получается)? And what you may be requiring in the way of help (и какая помощь может потребоваться вам; torequire– требовать, нуждаться в чем-либо; inthewayof– в отношении, что касается, по части)? – Invisible (невидимый)!”

“I came up behind you – hesitated – went on – ”

Mr. Marvel’s expression was eloquent.

“– then stopped. ‘Here,’ I said, ‘is an outcast like myself. This is the man for me.’ So I turned back and came to you – you. And – ”

“Lord!” said Mr. Marvel. “But I’m all in a tizzy. May I ask – How is it? And what you may be requiring in the way of help? – Invisible!”

“I want you to help me get clothes – and shelter (я хочу, чтобы ты помог мне достать одежду, кров) – and then, with other things (и потом еще кое-что). I’ve left them long enough (я оставил их довольно давно = уже давно у меня этого нет). If you won’t – well (если ты не поможешь, что ж)! But you will – must (но ты поможешь, должен помочь).”

“Look here (послушайте),” said Mr. Marvel. “I’m too flabbergasted (я слишком ошеломлен). Don’t knock me about any more (больше меня не бейте). And leave me go (и отпустите меня). I must get steady a bit (мне надо немного успокоиться; steady– устойчивый; прочный, твердый). And you’ve pretty near broken my toe (а вы чуть не сломали мне палец; to break-broke-broken). It’s all so unreasonable (все это так странно; unreasonable– не/благо/разумный; чрезмерный). Empty downs, empty sky (пустые холмы, пустое небо). Nothing visible for miles except the bosom of Nature (на много миль вокруг ничего не видать, кроме природы; bosom– грудь; пазуха; лоно; недра). And then comes a voice (и тут раздается голос). A voice out of heaven (голос с небес)! And stones (и камни)! And a fist – Lord (и кулак – Господи)!”

“I want you to help me get clothes – and shelter – and then, with other things. I’ve left them long enough. If you won’t – well! But you will – must.”

Empty downs, empty sky. Nothing visible for miles except the bosom of Nature. And then comes a voice. A voice out of heaven! And stones! And a fist – Lord!”

Mr. Marvel blew out his cheeks (Марвел надул щеки; to blow out), and his eyes were round (и его глаза стали круглыми).

“I’ve chosen you (я выбрал тебя),” said the Voice. “You are the only man except some of those fools down there (ты единственный человек, кроме тех дураков внизу), who knows there is such a thing as an invisible man (который знает, что существует такая штука как невидимый человек). You have to be my helper (ты должен стать моим помощником). Help me – and I will do great things for you (помоги мне – и я многое сделаю для тебя). An invisible man is a man of power (невидимый человек – это человек, обладающий большой силой).” He stopped for a moment to sneeze violently (он замолчал на миг и громко чихнул).

“Pull yourself together,” said the Voice, “for you have to do the job I’ve chosen for you.”

Mr. Marvel blew out his cheeks, and his eyes were round.

“I’ve chosen you,” said the Voice. “You are the only man except some of those fools down there, who knows there is such a thing as an invisible man. You have to be my helper. Help me – and I will do great things for you. An invisible man is a man of power.” He stopped for a moment to sneeze violently.

“But if you betray me (но если ты предашь меня),” he said, “if you fail to do as I direct you – (если ты не сделаешь то, что я прикажу; to fail – потерпетьнеудачу, неисполнить)” He paused and tapped Mr. Marvel’s shoulder smartly (он остановился и резко хлопнул мистера Марвела по плечу; to tap – стучать, хлопать; tap – легкийстук, слабыйудар; smartly —энергично, сильно, резко). Mr. Marvel gave a yelp of terror at the touch (тот вскрикнул от ужаса при прикосновении; yelp – визг, повизгивание; вскрикивание/отболи/).

“I don’t want to betray you (я не хочу предавать вас),” said Mr. Marvel, edging away from the direction of the fingers (сказал Марвел, осторожно отодвигаясь от пальцев /Невидимки/; to edge away – отходитьосторожно, бочком; edge – кромка, край; грань; direction – направление). “Don’t you go a-thinking that, whatever you do (даже не думайте об этом, чтобы вы ни делали = об этом не может быть и речи, само собой разумеется). All I want to do is to help you (все, что я хочу – помочь вам = с радостью вам помогу) – just tell me what I got to do (просто скажите, что я должен делать). (Lord!) (Господи!) Whatever you want done (все, что вы хотите), that I’m most willing to do (я охотно сделаю; willing– готовый /сделать что-либо/; охотно делающий /что-либо/).”

“But if you betray me,” he said, “if you fail to do as I direct you – ” He paused and tapped Mr. Marvel’s shoulder smartly. Mr. Marvel gave a yelp of terror at the touch.

“I don’t want to betray you,” said Mr. Marvel, edging away from the direction of the fingers. “Don’t you go a-thinking that, whatever you do. All I want to do is to help you – just tell me what I got to do. (Lord!) Whatever you want done, that I’m most willing to do.”
