Тогда рассматриваемый конфликт еще не называли “Первой мировой войной”. Обычно речь шла о “мировой” или “Европейской” войне, позднее – о “Великой”. Название “Первая мировая война”, как считается, придумал военный корреспондент Times Чарльз Репингтон. Уже в сентябре 1918 года он понял, что характеристика конфликта, данная Г. Дж. Уэллсом – “Война, которая положит конец всем войнам”, – чересчур оптимистична.

В классической версии, приведенной Аксельродом в книге “Эволюция сотрудничества”, это похоже на карточную игру. Ведущий платит обоим игрокам по 300 долларов, если они разыгрывают карты сотрудничества, платит 500 долларов предателю и забирает 100 долларов у неудачника, если предает только один из игроков, и забирает у обоих по 10 долларов, если предают оба. Аксельрод описывает серию “турниров” по этой игре между компьютерными программами. Лучше всего себя показала программа под названием “Око за око” (ОО). Она никогда не предавала первой и начинала предавать только в ответ – и только до какого-то момента, а потом возвращалась к сотрудничеству. По итогам простой игры на 200 ходов (с тремя очками вознаграждения при обоюдном сотрудничестве), ОО набирала в среднем 504 очка, обгоняя прочие программы. При этом всю первую десятку составляли программы, не предававшие первыми. ОО выиграла пять из шести проведенных Аксельродом турниров, благодаря сочетанию “доброты, готовности к ответным мерам, готовности прощать и ясности тактики”.
