За день до моего отъезда в Мостаре проходил марш мира. Десятки тысяч молодых людей и даже совсем детей проследовали по улицам города на стадион, где был устроен митинг мира. Люди шли пешком, ехали на машинах, мотороллерах, велосипедах – и почти каждый из них нес два символа мира: красно-бело-голубой югославский флаг с красной звездой и портрет Тито. В память мне врезалась одна особенно трогательная сценка. В общей колонне двигался отряд девочек и мальчиков, родившихся, судя по всему, уже после смерти Тито, портрет которого они несли над своими головами, старательно поднимая вверх колени и размахивая руками. При этом они хором декламировали старый клич партизан: «Тито – наш, а мы – Тито» («Тито е наш, и ми емо Титови»). Этот лозунг, который сорок лет назад я находил отталкивающим и тоталитаристским, теперь умилил и тронул меня до глубины души. С тех пор, как я познакомился с Югославией и видел ее под властью Тито, мне и в голову не приходило, что я когда-нибудь увижу его во главе крестового похода детей. Наблюдая за этой, вызывающей жалость, обреченной процессией, я почувствовал, как мной все больше овладевает ужас приближающейся катастрофы.
