Although the journey was comfortable, both Glumdalclitch and I were very tired by the end of it. We were to spend some days at the King's palace near Flanflasnic, about eighteen miles from the sea.

I had a slight cold, and Glumdalclitch was so ill she had to stay in her room for some days. I longed to see the sea again. I pretended to be rather more ill than I really was and then I asked if I might be allowed the pleasure of fresh sea air. One of the young servants, who had sometimes looked after me before, was told to take me down to the sea.

Poor little Glumdalclitch was not at all happy about this (бедная маленькая Глюмдалклич была совершенно этому не рада = очень обеспокоена этим). She gave the servant all kinds of orders (она давала слуге всяческие наставления) about how to take care of me (о том, как /нужно/ обо мне заботиться). It took the servant about half an hour to walk down to the sea, carrying my box by hand. When we arrived, I opened one of my windows and looked out at the sea for some time. I was not feeling very well and I told the servant that I would sleep for a while in my hammock. The boy shut the window to keep out the cold and went off to explore some rocks nearby.

I soon fell asleep. I'm not exactly sure what happened next. The servant boy must have gone a little too far away. I was woken by a sudden, violent pull of the ring on the roof of my box.

I could feel the box rising very high into the air. Then it seemed to move along at amazing speed. I called out loud, but nobody answered. Looking out of my windows, I could see nothing but clouds and sky on three sides. Then I realised that the noise over my head was the flapping of wings.

An eagle must have the ring of my box in its beak (должно быть, орел схватил клювом кольцо моего ящика: «имел = держал кольцо моего ящика в своем клюве»)! Soon it would let the box fall on some rocks (/и/ скоро он бросит ящик на скалы). An eagle must have the ring of my box in its beak! Soon it would let the box fall on some rocks. When it had broken, the bird would pick out my body and eat it.

There were some bumps and then suddenly I felt myself falling straight down. I almost lost my breath. There was a terrible splash. Then I was in the dark for a minute. The box began to rise again. I could see light at the tops of my windows.

I had fallen into the sea. My box floated about five feet deep in the water. I imagined that the eagle that flew away with my box had been followed by two or three others. He must have let it drop. The plates of iron on the bottom of the box had made it fall straight down and had also kept it in one piece when it hit the water.

I could see that very little water had come in. After a little while I got out of my hammock and opened the hole in the roof to get some air. Then I thought of my dear little Glumdalclitch. How she would suffer and what would happen to her now. Perhaps she would have to leave the Court and what, I wondered, would the King and Queen say.

I was afraid that wind or wave would turn my box over. If the glass in the windows broke, the water would come pouring in. I had no food and nothing to drink. I couldn't lift up the roof of the box and I could not squeeze through the small hole. All I could do was to try to stuff something into some of the small holes that were letting water into my box.

I spent about four hours in my box, floating around in the sea. I expected that each moment would be my last. Suddenly I heard a noise on the side that had no window. That was the side with hooks on the outside.

The box was being pulled through the sea (ящик тащили по морю). I could hear footsteps on the roof (я услышал шаги на крыше). I could hear footsteps on the roof. Then a voice called out in English, «If there is anybody below, let him speak.» I said I was an Englishman and begged to be rescued as soon as possible. The voice told me I was safe and that my box was fastened to their ship. There was a carpenter on his way to make a bigger hole in the roof so I could get out. I asked him not to wait, just to put his finger through the ring and pull the box out of the sea and into the captain's cabin.

Then I heard people laughing. Later, I was told that some of the sailors had thought I was mad. It had never entered my head that I was now among people of my own size and strength.

Within minutes I was aboard ship (спустя несколько минут я находился на борту корабля) and being asked a thousand questions (и мне задавали тысячи вопросов). Within minutes I was aboard ship and being asked a thousand questions. I was amazed at the sight of so many pygmies. My eyes were so used to looking at monstrous objects, I couldn't believe the size of these small people. I was quite unable to answer any of their questions.

The captain, Mr Thomas Wilcocks, could see that I was not well. He took me to his cabin, gave me a drink, and told me to rest for a while. Before I went to sleep I told the captain to be sure to rescue all the valuable furniture and other things from my travelling box, including the silk with which it was lined.

I slept for some hours and felt a great deal better when I awoke at about eight o'clock in the evening. The captain ordered supper to be served and looked after me with great kindness. When we were alone once more, he asked me to explain why I had been floating around in the sea in a wooden box. At this stage he must have felt that I wasn't completely mad after all.

At noon that day the captain had been looking through his telescope and had seen something that looked like a sail. He had ordered his ship to sail in that direction, hoping to buy some provisions. He had sent some sailors off in a small boat and they had come back claiming that there was a house floating in the sea. He had returned with the sailors in the small boat and towed the box back to his ship.

I asked whether he or any of the sailors had seen any enormous birds in those parts (я спросил /капитана/, не видел ли он или кто-нибудь из матросов в тех местах громадных птиц; part – часть, доля; /обычно во мн. ч./ край, местность, места) around the time they had first seen my box (приблизительно в то время, когда мой ящик заметили: «впервые увидели» /с корабля/). I asked whether he or any of the sailors had seen any enormous birds in those parts around the time they had first seen my box. One of the sailors had seen three eagles flying towards the north, but he had not remarked on their size. That must have been because they were flying at a great height.

I could see that the captain found my question odd. I guessed what he was thinking when he once more suggested that I rest for a while. When I explained that I was feeling very well indeed, he grew serious at once. What law had I broken, he wished to know, that some prince or other had sent me to sea in a box and without any food.

Soon I had told him the story of my travels (скоро я поведал ему историю моих путешествий), from the time I left England (со времени, как я покинул Англию) to the time he found me (до момента, когда он меня нашел). Soon I had told him the story of my travels, from the time I left England to the time he found me. When I had finished, I could see that he believed me. However, I wanted to give him some proof. I asked it he would be kind enough to have the cupboard from my travelling box brought to his cabin.

The captain looked on while I took the key from my pocket and unlocked my cupboard. I showed him the comb I had made from the stumps of the King's beard. There was another I had made using a paring from the Queen's thumbnail as the back of the comb. I still had some combings of the Queen's hair and some of Glumdalclitch's needles that were a foot or more long. I also showed him the four wasp stings and a large gold ring the Queen had given me. She had taken it from her little finger one day and thrown it over my head like a collar.

I begged the captain to accept this ring (я очень просил капитана принять это кольцо) in return for the kindness he had shown me (в благодарность за доброту, проявленную им в отношении меня; kindness – доброта; благожелательность; любезность; доброе дело; одолжение; услуга; to show kindness – проявлять доброту, выказывать расположение). I begged the captain to accept this ring in return for the kindness he had shown me. But this he refused to do. The only thing he would accept was a servant’s tooth that I had cleaned and kept. It had been pulled by mistake by the palace surgeon and was in perfect condition. It was about a foot long and four inches broad.

The captain hoped that I would write a book about my travels when I returned to England. I thanked him for his interest and promised to think the matter over.
