surround [sə'raund], judge [dʒʌdʒ], wrong [rɔŋ]

I would like to tell the reader a little about the countryside which surrounded the city I was living in. I saw a good deal of it, since I always went with the King and Queen on their journeys and I often went into the city with Glumdalclitch.

As far as I could judge, Brobdingnag is about six thousand miles long and between three and five thousand miles wide. This vast mass of land must be joined to north-west America. European geographers are quite wrong in thinking that there is no land mass between Japan and California.

The country is a peninsula (страна /эта/ есть полуостров) surrounded on three sides by the ocean (окруженный с трех сторон океаном). There are very high mountains to the north (на севере расположены очень высокие горы). Nobody in the kingdom knows (никто в королевстве не знает) whether these mountains or the regions beyond them are inhabited (обитаемы ли эти горы или = и области за их пределами; to inhabit – жить, обитать; населять, заселять), since there are volcanoes in them (так как в них = в горах находятся вулканы).

There is no seaport in the kingdom (в королевстве нет ни одного морского порта), although a lot of ships and smaller boats sail the large rivers (несмотря на то, что по крупным рекам плавает множество кораблей и малых судов). The parts of the coast (/те/ части побережья) into which the rivers flow (в которые = куда текут реки = где реки впадают в море) are full of sharp and pointed rocks (полны = усеяны острыми скалами; sharp – острый; pointed – заостренный, остроконечный). These people therefore have no trade with the rest of the world (таким образом, эти люди не имеют торговых сношений с остальным миром).

The country is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the ocean. There are very high mountains to the north. Nobody in the kingdom knows whether these mountains or the regions beyond them are inhabited, since there are volcanoes in them.

There is a good deal of fine fishing in the rivers. The salt-water fish, however, are the same size as those in Europe and are considered too small to be worth catching. This is probably the only land area in the world where plants and animals of such extraordinary size are to be found. I leave it to the scholars to explain this fact.

The King's palace is not a building as such. It is a number of buildings surrounded by a wall seven miles long. We used to go outside the walls of the palace and into the city quite often. But what I hated most of all was the sight of lice crawling on their clothes. I could see the legs and noses of these lice quite clearly.

Apart from the box I was usually carried in, the Queen had a smaller box made for me. This travelling box was square, with a window in each of three sides. Each window had iron wire fitted to the outside. There was no window on the fourth side where two strong hooks were fixed to the outside, with room to pass a leather belt through. The person who carried me wore my box on his or her belt.

In this way, on longer journeys (таким образом, в дальних поездках) I could ride with a servant on horseback (я мог ехать со слугою верхом на лошади). In this way, on longer journeys I could ride with a servant on horseback. My box rested on a cushion in front of the rider. All the furniture in this travelling box was neatly screwed to the floor. It was comfortable enough for someone used to sailing at sea. I could also see a good deal of the countryside through my windows on the three sides.

I had a great desire to see the main temple (я имел большое желание = мне очень хотелось увидеть главный храм), which I had heard was the highest building in the land (который, /как/ я слышал, был самым высоким зданием в стране). My little nurse took me there one day (однажды моя нянюшка отвезла меня туда), but I was very disappointed at the sight (но я был очень разочарован /его/ видом). I had a great desire to see the main temple, which I had heard was the highest building in the land. My little nurse took me there one day, but I was very disappointed at the sight. It was no more than three thousand feet high, which was not so spectacular given the difference in size between these people and us Europeans. It was a beautiful building, however. It was made of stone and had walls that were a hundred feet thick. But there were other buildings and rooms that did impress me by their size. I doubt that the reader would believe me, if I described the King's kitchen or the size of the pots and kettles and the enormous joints of meat that were roasted there.

The King of Brobdingnag, however, might well feel (с другой стороны, король Бробдингнага вполне мог бы посчитать; to feel – ощупывать, осязать; чувствовать, ощущать; полагать, считать, быть убежденным) that I'd told too little about the size of his land (что я слишком мало рассказал о величине его страны). So perhaps I should also mention (так что мне, пожалуй, стоит упомянуть) the most splendid sight I saw (о самом блистательном/величественном зрелище, какое я видел) during my time there (во время моего пребывания там). That was the sight of the King's Guard (это было зрелище королевской гвардии; guard – охрана, защита; караул, конвой, стража; гвардия). The King of Brobdingnag, however, might well feel that I'd told too little about the size of his land. So perhaps I should also mention the most splendid sight I saw during my time there. That was the sight of the King's Guard. There were five hundred horses and riders, each horse between fifty-four and sixty feet high.

I would have been quite happy in Brobdingnag (я был бы вполне счастлив в Бробдингнаге) if I hadn't had so many accidents (если бы я не имел = со мной не происходило так много /неприятных/ случайностей; accident – /несчастный/ случай; случайность) because of my tiny size (из-за моего крохотного роста). I would have been quite happy in Brobdingnag if I hadn't had so many accidents because of my tiny size. Several of these accidents happened in the Palace gardens.

One day, for instance, I was taking a walk on the grass when there came a sudden shower of hailstones.

Glumdalclitch and her teacher were some distance away (Глюмдалклич со своей гувернанткой находились в некотором отдалении). The hailstones knocked me to the ground (градины сбили/повалили меня на землю; to knock – стучать; ударять, бить; сбить) and I couldn't move (и я не мог двинуться /с места/). Glumdalclitch and her teacher were some distance away. The hailstones knocked me to the ground and I couldn't move. I felt as though someone was throwing tennis balls at me with great force. I got so many bruises all over my body that I had to stay in my bedroom box for ten days. A hailstone in that country weighs almost eighteen hundred times as much as a European one. I know this because I have measured hailstones in both places.

A more dangerous accident also happened to me in the Palace garden (в дворцовом саду со мной случилось и /другое/ более опасное приключение) when I was left by myself for a short time one day (когда однажды я был оставлен на короткое время один без присмотра: «с самим собой»). A more dangerous accident also happened to me in the Palace garden when I was left by myself for a short time one day. A small spaniel belonging to one of the gardeners got into the garden by chance. It picked me up in its mouth and ran to its master. Both the gardener and I got a bad fright.

Fortunately, I hadn't been hurt in the least. My clothes weren't even torn. But Glumdalclitch, who had been looking for me, got a terrible shock. The Queen was never told. Glumdalclitch was afraid the Queen would be angry, and I didn't want other people to hear the story. I felt it made me look rather silly.

Unfortunately, I was allowed very little time to myself after that accident. Glumdalclitch didn't want me out of her sight unless I was in my box. Actually, I had earlier had several slight accidents that I hadn't told her about. Large birds, for example, were always a danger. Once or twice I came close to being carried off in their talons. Small birds, on the other hand, were only a nuisance. They weren't in the least afraid of me. They would steal food from my hand when I tried to eat out of doors.

The ladies of the Court often invited Glumdalclitch to their rooms. I would be invited to come along as well. They liked to talk to me, and I would often be placed on a table for this purpose.

I hated being there, sitting on the dressing table while they changed their clothes. They didn't mind in the least stripping to the skin while I was present. It felt very strange to be treated like this, as if I were a kitten or an insect that happened to be in the same room. For me, it was very far from being a pleasant sight. In fact it was a horrible sight. Their skin was so coarse and rough. To be close to a mole, a vast black thing with hairs as long as ropes, was something that disgusted me. To tell the truth, the smell that came from their skins also disgusted me.

I remember a friend of mine in Lilliput telling me one day when I had taken a lot of exercise (помню, как однажды, после того как я много занимался физическими упражнениями, один мой друг в Лилипутии сказал; exercise – упражнение, тренировка; физическая зарядка, моцион, прогулки и. т. п.) that I had a strong smell (что от меня исходит сильный запах). I remember a friend of mine in Lilliput telling me one day when I had taken a lot of exercise that I had a strong smell. I suppose his sense of smell in regard to me was as strong as my own sense of smell in regard to these ladies of the Court. I do not intend any lack of respect to the people of Brobdingnag in telling these facts. Perhaps I should add that both Glumdalclitch and the Queen always smelled very pleasant indeed.

The greatest danger I was ever placed in (величайшая опасность, какой только: «когда-либо» я подвергался; to place – помещать; размещать; ставить /в какую-л. ситуацию/) during my stay in that country (во время моего пребывания в той стране) came about (приключилась) while I was sitting quietly in my bedroom box one day (когда однажды я спокойно сидел в моем спальном ящике). The greatest danger I was ever placed in during my stay in that country came about while I was sitting quietly in my bedroom box one day. I had my door and windows open since it was a very warm day. My box had been placed in Glumdalclitch's room while she was off somewhere. She had locked her door, but left her window open. I became aware of a noise at her window. Something was skipping about from one side to the other. Looking out my own window, I froze with fright when I saw that it was a monkey. This monkey belonged to one of the workers in the Palace kitchen.

He put his paw in through my door (обезьяна просунула в дверь лапу). But he caught my coat (но обезьяна схватила меня за кафтан) and dragged me out (и вытащила наружу).

He peeped in my windows, grinning and chattering all the time. He soon caught sight of me. If only I had kept a cool head, I could have hidden under my bed. He put his paw in through my door. I tried to move along the wall and reach the far corner of my room. But he caught my coat and dragged me out.

He took me in his right paw (она взяла меня в правую лапу) and held me like a baby (и держала = стала держать как ребенка). Hearing a noise at the door of Glumdalclitch's room (услышав шум у двери комнаты Глюмдалклич), he leaped up to the window (обезьяна скакнула к окну) and out on the roof (/а оттуда/ на крышу). He climbed onto a roof that was next to ours, walking on three paws and holding me in the fourth (идя = передвигаясь на трех лапах и держа меня в четвертой, она перелезла/перебралась на крышу соседней постройки: «крышу, которая была ближайшей к нашей»). I could hear Glumdalclitch screaming behind me (я услышал позади себя крик Глюмдальклич) as we went through the window (/в ту минуту/ когда обезьяна выбиралась со мной из окна: «мы проходили через окно»).
