lawyer ['lɔ:jə], upheld [ʌp'held], opinion [ə'pɪnjən]

He had just as many questions about the Courts of Justice. He wanted to know whether the lawyers and judges who upheld the laws of the land had any part in making these laws, whether they were rich or poor, were paid for giving their opinion and whether they could ever become members of the House of Commons.

When it came to his views on the Treasury (когда речь зашла о взглядах короля на казначейство: «когда дошло до его взглядов…»), the King thought my memory had failed me (он посчитал, что мне изменила память; to fail – подводить, не оправдать ожиданий) and that I must be mistaken (и что я, должно быть, ошибаюсь; to mistake – ошибаться; неправильно понимать; заблуждаться). When it came to his views on the Treasury, the King thought my memory had failed me and that I must be mistaken. I had said that five or six million were collected in taxes by the Treasury every year. But when the different items I had mentioned were added together, the Treasury seemed to pay expenses that were the double of that amount. From whom did we borrow the money? And where did we find money to pay it back? He couldn't understand why we went to war so often when it cost so much money.

His Majesty was completely amazed by what I had told him of our history over the last hundred years. It seemed to him that we were a people who fight, kill and hate more than he had thought possible and were more cruel and greedy than he could have imagined.

The next time we spoke together His Majesty repeated his thoughts about all I had told him. I will never forget his words nor the way he spoke to me. He lifted me onto his hand and said, «My little friend Grildrig, you have made the most wonderful speeches about your country and it is clear that you love it very much indeed. You have spent so much of your life travelling, perhaps you have escaped many of the vices of your own people. From all the answers you have given me to my questions, I have the opinion that your people are the most horrible little insects that crawl upon the surface of this earth.»

This part of my story is so painful to me (эта часть моей истории так неприятна для меня; painful – причиняющий боль, болезненный; мучительный, тягостный, неприятный) that I would not have told it at all (что я не рассказывал бы ее вовсе), if I weren't so fond of truth (если бы я не был так привержен истине; fond – испытывающий нежные чувства /к кому-л./; любящий /что-л./). This part of my story is so painful to me that I would not have told it at all, if I weren't so fond of truth. I had answered all the King's questions as well as I could. I tried so hard with every answer I gave to present my country in a favourable light. Yet I failed to give the King of Brobdingnag any understanding of our ways of thinking.

However, a King who is so completely cut off from the rest of the world (однако = но, конечно, король, который совершенно отрезан от остального мира) will always think in a narrow-minded way (всегда будет мыслить узко/необъективно; mind – разум; мышление; narrow mind – узколобость; узость ума/мышления). It could never happen (такого никогда не могло бы случиться) in the more educated circles of European countries (в высокообразованных кругах европейских стран). I had hoped that His Majesty would think better of me (я надеялся, что его величество будет иметь обо мне лучшее мнение: «будет думать обо мне лучше») if I told him about our methods of war (если я расскажу ему о наших методах/средствах /ведения/ войны). However, a King who is so completely cut off from the rest of the world will always think in a narrow-minded way. It could never happen in the more educated circles of European countries. But education suffers when nothing is known of the ways of other countries. What happened next serves as an example of the King's poor education and proves my point.

I had hoped that His Majesty would think better of me if I told him about our methods of war. I decided therefore, to tell him something of the greatest importance.

I told him that we have a special powder in Europe and other parts of the world (я рассказал ему, что у нас в Европе и в других частях света есть особый порошок). I told him that we have a special powder in Europe and other parts of the world. When the tiniest spark of fire touches a small heap of this powder it catches fire and explodes into the air as though it is as big as a mountain, making a noise like thunder. I also told him that a small heap of powder can be put into a tube of brass or iron, from which it can drive a ball of lead with such speed that nothing can stand in its way. The largest of these balls can sink a ship, destroy a town or wipe out whole ranks of soldiers.

I told the King that I knew how to make this powder (я сказал королю, что знаю, как изготовить этот порошок) and that it didn't cost much money (и что это стоит недорого). I could also make the drawings (я также могу сделать чертежи) from which his workmen could make the tubes (по которым его мастера смогут изготовить стволы). How could I stand there (как я могу стоять здесь) describing scenes of blood (описывая = и описывать сцены кровопролития; blood – кровь; кровопролитие, убийство), death and waste (смерти и опустошения), as though I were doing him a favour (как будто я оказываю ему любезность; favour – благосклонность, расположение; любезность, услуга, одолжение)! (These were his very words (это его подлинные слова).) He would prefer to lose half his kingdom (он /заявил, что/ предпочел бы потерять половину своего королевства) than be given such a secret (чем быть посвященным в тайну /этого изобретения/).

I told the King that I knew how to make this powder and that it didn't cost much money. I could also make the drawings from which his workmen could make the tubes. I offered all this valuable knowledge to the King of Brobdingnag in return for the kindness he had shown me.

The King was struck with amazement and horror at the very idea. How could I stand there describing scenes of blood, death and waste, as though I were doing him a favour! (These were his very words.) He would prefer to lose half his kingdom than be given such a secret.

This is the same King (/и/ это тот самый король) who is considered by his own people to be learned and wise (который считается своим народом = которого народ считает ученым и мудрым). He is admired and loved in Brobdingnag (в Бробдингнаге к нему относятся с восхищением и любовью; to admire – восхищаться, восторгаться; любоваться). Yet, as will be clear to the reader (и при этом, как должно быть ясно/понятно читателю; will здесь выражает предположение, вероятность), this same man is so shortsighted in his understanding of the world (этот же человек так близорук/непредусмотрителен в своем понимании = видении мира), he couldn't grasp the chance I was offering him (/что/ не смог воспользоваться благоприятной возможностью, какую я ему предлагал; to grasp – схватывать, хватать; хвататься, ухватиться /за возможность, предложение/; понять; осознать).

This is the same King who is considered by his own people to be learned and wise. He is admired and loved in Brobdingnag. Yet, as will be clear to the reader, this same man is so shortsighted in his understanding of the world, he couldn't grasp the chance I was offering him.

It would have made him the master of the lives and fortunes of all his people. But his education is unfortunately so poor that he couldn't see that at all.

The King wasn't impressed either on hearing of the number of books (равным образом на короля совершенно не произвело впечатления количество книг: «король также не был поражен, услышав о количестве книг»; impress – делать отпечаток; оставлять след /в сознании/; производить впечатление, поражать) that are written in my country on the art of politics (об искусстве политики, написанных в моей стране). The King wasn't impressed either on hearing of the number of books that are written in my country on the art of politics. I told him about this one day. But he was of the opinion that all these writings were a waste of time. If a person could make two ears of corn or two blades of grass grow where only one had grown before, said the King, he would be doing his country a better service than that of all the politicians put together. The learning of these people is not very great. Their laws are also very simple. In fact there are so few people who break the laws of the land, their lawyers don't have much practice in the use of them.

They do, however, have the art of printing (искусство книгопечатания у них, однако, существует). But their libraries are not very large (но библиотеки их не очень велики). I was allowed (мне было дозволено) to borrow as many books as I wished from the King's library (брать из королевской библиотеки столько книг, сколько я пожелаю). In this way I was able to read something of the history of the country. I had begun to wonder after my conversations with the King why he kept an army at all. Reading their history, I could see that these people were not so different from the peoples of other countries. At different points in time the noble lords had wanted more power, the people had wanted their freedom and the King had wanted to keep all the power himself. War had broken out among them.

There had not been any trouble of that kind (неприятностей такого рода не было; trouble – беспокойство; волнение; неприятность; волнения, беспорядки) since the time of the present King's grandfather (со времени /правления/ деда нынешнего короля). There had not been any trouble of that kind since the time of the present King's grandfather. But an army was still kept all the same. I have never seen anything more magnificent than the sight of this army, mounted on horseback. At the word of command, they would draw their swords and hold them up. One soldier on a large horse stood ninety feet tall. I don't know how many horses there were all together. But when the soldiers flashed their swords it looked as though ten thousand flashes of lightning were darting at the same time from every part of the sky.

I had never given up hope (я никогда не оставлял надежду) of regaining my freedom (возвратить себе свободу) and being able to return to my own country (и иметь возможность вернуться на родину). This happened sooner than I had expected (это случилось скорее/раньше, чем я ожидал) and in a most unusual way (и самым необычным образом).

I had never given up hope of regaining my freedom and being able to return to my own country. This happened sooner than I had expected and in a most unusual way.

The ship in which I had sailed to Brobdingnag was the first ever seen from the coasts of that country. The King had given orders that if another ship appeared, everyone on board should be taken to Lorbrulgrud. He hoped one day to capture a woman of my own size for me. He would have liked me to have children so that my race would continue in Brobdingnag.

I would sooner have died than have this happen (я скорее согласился бы умереть, чем дать этому совершиться). I would sooner have died than have this happen. I had no wish to bring up children to be kept in cages like pet birds. I was the favourite of a great King and Queen and my own life at Court was pleasant enough. But it was not a life that I would wish children to have.

I often thought of my family in England. I hoped very much to see them again. I also wanted to talk to people again who were my equals. Imagine being able to walk in the streets or fields again without fear of being stepped on like a small frog or a puppy.

Glumdalclitch and I accompanied the King and Queen (сопровождали короля и королеву) on a journey to the south coast of the kingdom (в /их/ путешествии к южному побережью королевства). That was at the beginning of the third year of my stay in that country (это было в начале третьего года моего пребывания в той стране).

Glumdalclitch and I accompanied the King and Queen on a journey to the south coast of the kingdom. That was at the beginning of the third year of my stay in that country.

I travelled as usual in my travelling box. I had ordered a hammock to be slung by silk ropes from the four corners of the roof. This made my journey much more comfortable and I would often sleep in my hammock while we were on the road. I had also had a small, square hole cut in the roof, so that I could have fresh air in hot weather and could close it when I wished.
