He took me in his right paw and held me like a baby. I tried to struggle but he squeezed me so hard I thought it best to lie still. He stroked my face with his other paw. I think he took me for a baby monkey.

Hearing a noise at the door of Glumdalclitch's room, he leaped up to the window and out on the roof. He climbed onto a roof that was next to ours, walking on three paws and holding me in the fourth. I could hear Glumdalclitch screaming behind me as we went through the window.

Within minutes (/уже/ через несколько минут) people seemed to be running in every direction in that part of the palace (люди в этой части дворца, казалось, начали бегать во всех направлениях). Servants brought up ladders (слуги несли лестницы; to bring up – подвозить; подносить). Within minutes people seemed to be running in every direction in that part of the palace. Servants brought up ladders. Hundreds of people were standing in the yard below staring up at the monkey.

He sat, still holding me like a baby in one paw. He was trying to feed me with his other paw, having squeezed out some filthy meat from his cheek. And when I wouldn't eat he began patting me. The people below couldn't help laughing when they saw this. I don't blame them when I think about it now. It was probably a ridiculous sight for everyone except me.

There I sat, holding on to the edge of a tile, some five hundred yards from the ground. I expected the wind to blow me down any minute. But one of the young men finally reached me. Putting me into his pocket, he brought me safely down again.

When it was all over (после того как все закончилось) I had to stay in bed for two weeks (мне пришлось две недели провести в постели). When it was all over I had to stay in bed for two weeks. I had been badly bruised by the animal and I felt very weak. The King and Queen and many other people asked after my health every day. When I was better, I went to see the King to thank him for looking after me so well. He asked me how it felt to be held in the monkey's paw, whether I liked the monkey's food and whether the fresh air on the roof had given me an appetite. I told him that we had no monkeys in Europe except those brought there from other places, and these were so small that I could easily deal with a dozen at a time if I had been attacked that way. I didn't want the King to doubt my courage, so I put my hand on the hilt of my sword as I spoke, telling him in a very firm voice that it would of course have been better if I had remembered to draw my sword when the monkey put his paw into my bedroom box. Had I wounded him, he might have gone away. This speech, however, only made the King laugh loudly at me and most of the courtiers joined in.

Thinking about it afterwards, I could see that it isn't possible for a person to be taken seriously when among people who are not his equals. I have often noticed this in England since my return. If a man tries to make himself important in any way, and he comes from an ordinary family and has little money or education, he is regarded as both silly and foolish. He becomes an object of amusement.

Certainly, my activities in Brobdingnag were often the object of amusement at Court (определенно, мое времяпрепровождение в Бробдингнаге часто становилось поводом для смеха при дворе; activity – активность; деятельность, действия; занятие). Certainly, my activities in Brobdingnag were often the object of amusement at Court. One day, for example, as I was taking a walk in the country, I tried to jump over some cow dung that was lying on my path. I had taken a run at it, but I jumped short and landed up to my knees in the middle of it. I had to make the rest of the journey sitting in my muddy, smelly clothes inside my travelling box. That story like many others went around the palace for some days. Many people got a good laugh at my expense.

I made several things, both for myself and for other people during my stay in Brobdingnag (за время своего пребывания в Бробдингнаге я смастерил несколько предметов для себя и для других людей). I made several things, both for myself and for other people during my stay in Brobdingnag. My comb had so many broken teeth that I made a new one. I asked the King's barber to give me some soap suds when he was shaving the King one day and I picked forty or fifty stumps of hair out of this. I made the back of the comb from a piece of wood, making holes in it with the smallest needle I could borrow from Glumdalclitch. I fitted the hairs into these holes and was quite pleased with the result.

I also asked my friend the carpenter (также я попросил у моего друга столяра) to make me some chairs in my own size (сделать мне несколько стульев/кресел моего размера), giving him a drawing I had made of an English cane chair (дав ему сделанный мною чертеж английского камышового/плетеного стула; to draw – тащить; тянуть; проводить /линию, черту/; рисовать; чертить; cane – тростник; камыш; лоза). I also asked my friend the carpenter to make me some chairs in my own size, giving him a drawing I had made of an English cane chair. Then I asked one of the Queen's ladies to save me some combings from her Majesty's hair. From these, I was able to weave the back and seats of two small cane chairs. I made a present of them to the Queen.

I absolutely refused, saying that I could never bring myself to put that ignoble part of my body on the precious hairs that had once adorned her majestic head.

With her permission (с ее разрешения = с согласия королевы), I also used her hair (я также использовал ее волосы) to weave a purse for Glumdalclitch (чтобы сплести кошелек для Глюмдалклич). With her permission, I also used her hair to weave a purse for Glumdalclitch. She couldn't use it for coins since it was only five feet long and not very strong, but she liked it all the same.

I was so bold during one of these conversations as to let him know that I found it hard to accept the way he looked down on Europe and the rest of the world. I thought it a strange habit, since I had always found him a reasonable person. Reason, I told him one day, didn't depend on the size of the body. I made it clear that I hoped I would live to do him some service, even though he thought me so small as to be ridiculous. The King's opinion of me improved when I had said these things. He wanted to know more about my country.

It took five visits, each one lasting several hours, to tell him all I knew of the country that is so dear to me. The King listened with great interest each time, made many notes and asked a number of questions.

I told him a little about the size of the country and its climate. He was very interested to hear more about the English Parliament and how it assisted the King.

First I told him about the House of Lords and the great care taken in educating these noblemen, so that they were always ready to advise or defend their King. Some of them were holy persons with the title of Bishop, whose task it was to take care of religious matters.

For this purpose the King and his advisors sought out men (для /выполнения/ этой задачи король и его советники отыскивают мужей; to seek out) who had led good and holy lives (которые ведут добродетельную и благочестивую жизнь). For this purpose the King and his advisors sought out men who had led good and holy lives. Then I told him about the gentlemen of the House of Commons and how they were freely chosen by the people themselves because of their outstanding ability and love of their country.

I told him about our Courts of Justice, our army and our navy. He noted down what I told him about how carefully the wealth of the country was managed by the Treasury. I even told him about our sports and I finished up by telling him the main events of our history over the last hundred years. It was arranged that the King would tell me what he thought about all the information I had given him during our next conversation.

The next time we met His Majesty took out his notes and began to tell me his doubts and objections. Again, he asked a lot of questions.

He wanted to know what methods were used (он хотел узнать, какие методы применяются) to educate the minds and bodies of young noblemen (для духовного и телесного развития: «чтобы развивать умы и тела» молодых пэров; to educate – воспитывать, обучать; тренировать, упражнять; развивать; nobleman – дворянин; аристократ; титулованное лицо, пэр). He wanted to know what methods were used to educate the minds and bodies of young noblemen. In what kind of business did they spend their lives as young men? What qualities were necessary for a person to be made a lord? He wanted to know whether the wish of the King or a sum of money paid to some worthy cause played some part in a decision to appoint a new lord. He also asked whether a young priest might not pretend to hold the same views as some noble lord in the hope of being made a bishop one day.

The King of Brobdingnag found the idea behind the House of Commons very hard to grasp (королю Бробдингнага было очень трудно понять принципы, лежащие в основе палаты общин: «идею /лежащую/ за палатой общин»; to grasp – схватывать, хватать; понять, схватить /основную идею/; осознать; постичь). Why should people be so anxious (почему люди так страстно стремятся; why should – почему должен /некто что-л. делать/; с какой стати; anxious – озабоченный, беспокоящийся; стремящийся, страстно желающий /чего-л./) to become a member of this House (стать членом = членами этой палаты) when they got no payment for their job (если они не получают платы за свою работу)? Didn't I think (не думаю ли я) they would try to act so (что они будут стремиться действовать/поступать таким образом) as to be sure that their own money was carefully preserved (чтобы их финансовое положение не пострадало: «чтобы быть уверенными /в том/, что их собственные деньги тщательно сохраняются»)? The King of Brobdingnag found the idea behind the House of Commons very hard to grasp. Mightn't a person with a great deal of money be able to persuade other people to vote for him? Why should people be so anxious to become a member of this House when they got no payment for their job?
