A VOYAGE TO LILLIPUT (ПУТЕШЕСТВИЕ В ЛИЛИПУТИЮ)

I read many books in my spare time and learned a lot about other people's customs and language. However, when the last of these voyages did nothing to improve my finances, I grew tired of the sea and decided to stay at home with my wife and family.

We moved to Wapping, hoping to find business there. But there was little work and things didn't improve. I therefore accepted an offer from Captain William Prichard, master of the Antelope, who was going on a voyage to the South Seas. We set sail from Bristol on May 4^th, 1699.

Our voyage went very well until a wild storm drove us off course when we were north-west of Van Diemen's land. The storm left twelve of our crew dead and the rest extremely weak. On November 5^th, the beginning of summer in that part of the world, the wind was so strong that we were forced onto a rock. The ship immediately broke up.

Six of us managed to get clear of the ship and the rock in a small boat (шестеро из нас сумели = шестерым из нас удалось отойти от корабля и скалы в маленькой лодке; to get clear of … – сбежать; избежать /чего-л./, избавиться от /чего-л. опасного, неприятного/). Six of us managed to get clear of the ship and the rock in a small boat. We rowed for about three leagues until we could row no more, being already exhausted from our work on the ship. About half an hour later the boat was turned over by a huge wave from the north. I swam, pushed forward by wind and sea, until I found I could touch the ground. I must have walked nearly a mile before I got to the shore at about eight o'clock in the evening.

I walked on a little further (я прошел немного дальше; on указывает на продолжение действия), but couldn't see any sign of houses or people (но не увидел: «не смог увидеть» никаких признаков домов/жилищ или людей; any – какой-нибудь; никакой, ни один /в отрицательных предложениях/; sign – знак; символ; признак). I walked on a little further, but couldn't see any sign of houses or people. I was extremely tired. All I wanted to do was sleep. I lay down on the grass, which was very short and soft, and slept better than I had ever done in my life.

I must have slept for more than nine hours (я, вероятно, проспал более девяти часов) because when I woke up (потому что, когда я проснулся; to wake up) it was daylight (было совсем светло; daylight – дневной свет; день, светлое время суток). I must have slept for more than nine hours because when I woke up it was daylight. I tried to get up, but I couldn't move. I was lying on my back. My arms and legs were tightly fastened to the ground on each side. My long, thick hair was tied down in the same way. I also felt several fine threads across my body from my arms to my legs. I heard noises around me, but from where I lay I could see nothing but sky.

A moment later I felt something alive moving up my left leg, then along my body towards my face. I lowered my eyes as much as I could and saw a human creature about six inches high, with a bow and arrow in his hands. Then I felt what must have been at least forty more of the same creatures following the first. I was completely amazed, and roared so loudly that they all ran back in fright.

I struggled to get free (я попытался освободиться; to struggle – бороться; биться, отбиваться; делать усилия, стараться изо всех сил; free – свободный). I struggled to get free. Luckily some of the strings broke and I managed to pull out the pegs that pinned my left arm to the ground. With a violent pull, which was quite painful, I loosened the strings that tied my hair on the left. I was then able to turn my head about two inches. I tried to get hold of the creatures, but they ran away.

I heard one of them shout (я услышал, /как/ один из них закричал), «Tolgo phonac!» Suddenly more than a hundred tiny arrows pricked my left hand like needles (вдруг более сотни крохотных стрел вонзились, как иглы, в мою левую руку: «укололи мою руку, как иглы»). I heard one of them shout, «Tolgo phonac!» Suddenly more than a hundred tiny arrows pricked my left hand like needles. A second shower of arrows hit my body and face which I immediately covered with my left hand.

I thought the best thing to do would be to lie still until dark, and then free myself with my left hand. When the people saw I was quiet they stopped firing arrows. I knew by the noise that more people had arrived.

I heard a knocking noise to my right (справа от себя я услышал стук: «стукающий шум/звук»), the sound of people working (как будто работают люди: «шум людей, которые работают»; sound – звук; шум). Turning my head as much as I could (повернув голову, насколько возможно), I saw they had built a stage (я увидел, /что/ они построили/соорудили помост; to build) about four yards from my ear (/на расстоянии/ приблизительно в четыре ярда от моего уха). I heard a knocking noise to my right, the sound of people working. Turning my head as much as I could, I saw they had built a stage about four yards from my ear. It was about a foot and a half from the ground with ladders up to it. It held four people, one of whom cried out, «Langro dehul san!» Immediately about fifty people came over to me and cut the strings that held the left side of my head.

I could then turn and see the person speaking (после этого я смог повернутся и увидеть говорящего; person – человек; личность, особа). He was middle-aged and taller than the others (он был /человеком/ средних лет и выше /ростом/, чем другие/остальные). I could then turn and see the person speaking. He was middle-aged and taller than the others. He made a long speech, which I didn't understand a word of, but I could see that it included threats, promises, pity and kindness. I answered in a few words and acted in a peaceful manner.

Not having eaten a bite of food for some hours (не ев = не имея во рту ни куска пищи /со времени за/ несколько часов; to eat) before I left the ship (до того, как я оставил корабль), I was extremely hungry (я был крайне голоден). Not having eaten a bite of food for some hours before I left the ship, I was extremely hungry. I put my finger on my mouth to show that I wanted food. The Hurgo (this is what they call a great Lord, I learned afterwards) understood me very well. He got down from the stage and ordered several ladders to be placed at my sides.

More than a hundred people carrying baskets of food (более ста человек, несущих корзины = нагруженных корзинами с едой) began to climb the ladders (начали взбираться по лестницам; to begin) and walk towards my mouth (и подходить к моему рту). These baskets, which had been sent by the Emperor (эти корзины, присланные императором; to send), were full of meat (были наполнены мясом). More than a hundred people carrying baskets of food began to climb the ladders and walk towards my mouth. These baskets, which had been sent by the Emperor, were full of meat. There were shoulders and legs of what looked like mutton, but smaller than the wings of a bird. I ate two or three of these in one mouthful, and took three loaves at a time. They fed me as fast as they could, with wonder and astonishment at my appetite.

I then made another sign that I wanted a drink (потом я сделал другой знак, /показывая/ что хочу пить). I then made another sign that I wanted a drink. They knew that a small amount would not be enough, so they rolled a cask of wine towards my hand, then beat out the top. It held less than half a pint and I drank it all in one go. They brought me a second cask, which I drank in the same way. When I had performed these wonders they shouted with joy and danced on my body. I wanted to grab forty or fifty of the ones I could reach and throw them to the ground. But since they had treated me so kindly, I felt I should return their kindness.

I made a sign that I wanted to be set free. He shook his head and held his hand to show that I must be carried as a prisoner. However, he made other signs to show that I would have enough to eat and drink and would be treated well.

I thought again of trying to break my bonds (я снова подумал о /том, чтобы/ попытаться разорвать свои узы).
