PART I

Six Months After Book 2

“He’s busy right now, but he told me we can meet up in Milan.”

The words came from Shane, her elegant drawl drifting from the hallway and into the living room, where nineteen-year-old Serenity was. Through the open door, Serenity saw her half-sister pout in front of the mirror even while on the phone. It was as if the model in Shane never rested, and every second had to be spent posing.

“I’ve got a one-night gig there. Oh, you know, the usual. They just want me to make an appearance in the newly opened club, and that’s it. Yes, totally, I agree – my value’s gone up since someone let the cat out of the bag about me and Willem marrying.”

At the mention of Willem’s name, Serenity’s fingers tightened around the edges of her book.

From the hallway, she heard Shane let out a laugh. “Oh, my goodness, you don’t know either? I thought it was an open secret.”

Serenity lowered her head. An open secret, she thought numbly. Whoever Shane was talking to, she definitely wasn’t alone in thinking that nothing serious had been going on between Willem and Shane Raleigh.

Serenity had thought the same thing, until that night.

From her room, Shane smiled in vicious satisfaction as she caught the flash of pain on her sister’s face through the mirror. I hope she dies in misery, Shane thought. Even now, she couldn’t see what had attracted the Dutch billionaire to Serenity. The girl was like a paler version of herself, in every way. She was a total bore, with nothing to say to anyone. How could Willem de Konigh want someone like her?

Perhaps it was her innocence, Shane thought. Even she couldn’t deny how her sister was the very picture of propriety. Maybe it was the novelty of enjoying a girl’s virginity. The thought made Shane mentally shrug. Well, there was no doubt Willem had already deflowered Serenity. She had been awake the whole time Serenity had cried out for the billionaire to wait, cried out for Willem not to leave.

Shane’s lip curled. Pathetic. It just showed how little Serenity understood men. True love was wasted on sought-after billionaires like Willem de Konigh. It was all about sexual conquests and asset protection, and Serenity was a fool to believe she would get someone like Willem de Konigh to fall for her just because he was the one to tear her hymen with his cock.

Pathetic, Shane thought again. Pathetic little idiot. I hope you stay miserable forever.

****

Routines and regimes had always made Serenity feel normal. Since she was a child, she had become accustomed to strictly adhering to a fixed timetable for her day, and in the years that followed her father’s death, she had found herself drawing comfort from the repetitive patterns that shaped her days in the institution. Precise mealtimes, medication every six hours, and meetings with the counselor every Friday – everything had a place and time, and Serenity had liked it that way because it allowed her not to think.

When she had first left Willem’s employ, it had been the same. Routines had also come to her rescue, with most of her days spent in the library and cycling around town.

But it was different now.

She had tried so very hard to create her own timetable, to find things that would occupy her mind and get her heart to start beating again. But nothing worked. The memories didn’t care about the time or place. She could be enjoying breakfast alone in the dining room. She could be in the car, listening to another one of Melanie’s scathing reprimands. She could be shopping for clothes in a nearby boutique. There was just no telling when and where it would happen.

They would simply pop out of nowhere—

And in the blink of an eye, Serenity would be back on that awful, awful morning.

Like now.

She was only ten minutes into the half-hour train ride to Amsterdam-Zuid when suddenly an image of Willem superimposed itself on her mind. He had his back to her, and even though she knew it was unreal, her throat started tightening up—

The imaginary Willem began to walk away.

Her lips started to tremble, and she deliberately sank her teeth into it, trying to keep herself from reacting.

In her mind, he was still walking away.

Wait. Please. Wait. Her mind screamed the words, and her eyes started to sting.

Her heart was bleeding, her chest heaving at the pain that was trying to tear her apart.

“Miss? Are you okay, Miss?”

With a start, she realized she was crying, the tears blurring her gaze forcing her to blink rapidly until her vision cleared. Embarrassed, she wiped the tears away hastily as she mumbled a reply. She could feel people’s gazes on her now, staring and no doubt wondering why she had broken down in tears out of the blue.

Serenity fixed her gaze numbly on the windows.

Because I loved, she thought dully. It was that simple, agonizingly so. She had loved, but it had not been returned.

****

Serenity’s melancholic mood did not leave her even when she had made it to the VU and was surrounded by lively chatter and laughter from students her age. She saw but didn’t really see them. It didn’t feel right, to be here, and she had a terrifying fear that Netherlands would never feel right again, not as long as she knew the Dutch billionaire was also living in the same country, breathing the same air she did.

She was supposed to go to the university’s admissions office, but instead she found herself drifting to the university’s library. There was a newsstand, and right in the center of the front pages was a photo of Willem himself. Before she knew what she was doing, she had already plucked the newspaper off, her eyes quickly scanning the article.

One word jumped out of her.

Milan.

According to the report, no one had expected Willem to be at the Milan business conference, and his presence had sent everyone in a flurry. Analysts voiced out their wildest predictions, which ranged from the Dutch billionaire being interested in rescuing an iconic but financially struggling Italian company to simply being there because he had a dalliance with an Italian starlet.

They hadn’t known at all, Serenity thought, but Shane had.

Her sister had known as early as yesterday.

And suddenly, she’d had enough.

****

Melanie was still screeching and raging.

“Do you think I’m just going to let you leave like that, you ungrateful little bitch?”

Serenity remained quietly in her seat, appearing to listen but not really hearing anything.

“Answer me!” Melanie’s fist slammed down, and the plates on the table rattled at the impact.

Serenity opened her mouth to answer, but before she could do so, the door to the dining room opened and her half-sister came sailing in.

“Jesus,” Shane drawled, “that’s quite a racket you’re making, mother dear. What’s wrong?” She bent down to kiss her mother’s cheek before claiming the seat across Serenity. She allowed herself a quick survey of the younger woman’s features and was satisfied at the sight of Serenity’s red and swollen eyes.

Boo-hoo-hoo, Shane thought without an ounce of pity.

Melanie threw a fuming look at her stepdaughter. “Maybe you can talk to this ungrateful little bitch instead,” she gritted out to Shane. “The fool wants to leave my house to study in Greece!”

Shane’s eyebrows arched up in surprise. “Greece?” She disliked the idea immensely, only because it would mean not being able to torture her sister every day and seeing the impact of her words on Serenity’s face. “I agree with my mother. It’s not a good idea for someone like you to—”

Serenity quietly interrupted, “But I am going.”

Shane’s eyes narrowed. “Excuse me?” She waited for Serenity to back down, like she always did, but instead her younger sister only met her gaze, pale-faced and unspeaking. Serenity had never gone against either her or Melanie, and for one crazy moment, she wondered if Serenity had found out the truth.

No, impossible, Shane thought even as her heart raced in apprehension. That night Willem had come knocking on her door, he had been unequivocal and adamant in his request: Serenity was to believe he and Shane continued to see each other, and for Shane to say whatever was necessary to keep Serenity away from him.

“Before I agree, I want you to answer me first.” Shane turned to face him. She was dressed in a near-transparent nightgown and was completely naked under the loose, flowing lace. She watched his expression obsessively, but to her fury and humiliation, the Dutch billionaire only looked at her as if he was seeing another man.

“I know what you want to ask, and my answer is that it doesn’t matter.” The billionaire’s voice was clipped, his face hard. “I can see on your face you know I’ve spent the night with her. It was the first time – and it will be the last, with your cooperation.”

“Was it because she was a virgin and I’m not?” Shane couldn’t stop herself from demanding harshly. “Is that your new fetish? Deflowering—” The icy anger that blazed on Willem de Konigh’s blue eyes cut her off, and she had to swallow the rest of what she wanted to say.

“Never,” the billionaire said very softly, “say something like that in my presence again.”

“I’m sorry.” At the face of Willem de Konigh’s anger, Shane was quick to apologize. “But you can’t blame me, Willem. I know you don’t love me, but my sister? Why her, of all people?” She, too, knew Willem long enough to read him. She knew, just by looking at him, that the game was up as far as her innocent charade was concerned. But she also knew she still had a shot to remain in his good graces, if she played her cards right.

Bingo, Shane thought coldly as the billionaire flushed under his tan at her words.

“It will not happen again.” The billionaire breathed hard. “I will be very much grateful if you could cooperate with me on this, and you will be rewarded amply for your help.”

She lowered her gaze so the billionaire wouldn’t see her eyes glittering at his mention of a reward. Even so, she pretended to refuse, saying in a trembling voice, “I don’t need any reward to do what you want. You betrayed me – you and Serenity betrayed me.” She allowed a little of her bitterness to creep in, knowing it would make her words believable. “Keeping her away from you would be my pleasure.”

The billionaire sucked his breath in audibly. “I am sorry for this, Shane. Just know I am completely to blame for this. And please allow me to atone for my mistake in a way that would be of significant help to you.”

Even with her head bowed, she saw the billionaire’s fists clench, and she held her breath, knowing that whatever Willem had to say next, it would be very important and possibly determine her next move.

“I just have one request.”

Shane whispered, “What is it?”

“Do not be cruel to Serenity. Say only what you need, but do not be cruel about it. She will already be hurt when I leave. I do not want her to suffer even more.”

Shane’s blood went cold.

Fool, she thought, and this time her bitterness knew no bounds. The billionaire was a fool. He could have had Shane as a bride, and yet he had gone on to fall for her little sister.

Her eyes sparkling with fake tears, she choked out to Willem, “Of course.” But in her heart, she was vowing to do the opposite.

The memories aroused all of Shane’s bitterness and pain, causing Serenity to shrink in her seat when their eyes met again.

“You will stay here,” Shane hissed, “and that’s final.”

Serenity shook her head even though the hatred blazing from her half-sister’s eyes made her quake in her seat. “I’m s-sorry, but I’ve made up my mind.”

Shane half rose from her seat, and before anyone could guess what was happening, Shane’s hand had connected with Serenity’s cheek in a resounding slap.

“Shane,” Melanie gasped in shock, completely taken aback by the animosity on her daughter’s face.

Serenity’s eyes were wide with shock, one hand coming up to touch her stinging cheek.

“How dare you be ungrateful when my mother and I were selfless and kind enough to take you in even when you were just my father’s bastard?” Pushing her chair back, Shane stalked around the table and grabbed a fistful of Serenity’s hair.

“Oh my God, Shane!” Melanie jumped to her feet, aghast at the display of violence but helpless against it. She didn’t know Shane this way and was terrified by it. What was happening?

Serenity started struggling the moment Shane dragged her off her chair, but the woman seemed to possess incredible strength, and she couldn’t pull away from Shane.

“We should have just had locked you up,” Shane shouted at her face while her fingers tightened its grip, causing Serenity’s eyes to sting. “At least you wouldn’t have caused us any trouble, and you wouldn’t have been able to flirt with Willem—”

Serenity whitened.

Melanie stilled.

Shane started to laugh. “Did you think I didn’t know?” In the back of her mind, she could hear the billionaire’s voice, warning her against saying anything remotely cruel to her half-sister, but she ignored this.

She shoved Serenity away from her and was satisfied to see Serenity lose her balance, her back hitting the wall with a loud thud before crumpling to the floor.

“Willem came to my room right after he took your virginity,” she sneered. “He told me that you had made him believe you would be practical, but one look at your face after sex made him realize you were going to be clingy and pathetic. So he told me to do what I can and keep you away.”

Serenity felt faint as she listened to Shane speak, and when her sister was finished, she whispered, “You’re lying.”

Shane’s eyes glittered. “Am I?” she taunted. “If I’m lying, then tell me, how do I know that Willem likes to call you his engel?”

Serenity’s heart slowly stopped beating.

“Yes,” Shane jeered. “He told me that. Do you want me to tell you the other things he told me? Like how many times he had fucked you?” It was a bluff, but because she knew of the billionaire’s sexual stamina firsthand, she was certain he would have made her half-sister come more than once. And when Serenity whitened even more at her words, Shane knew she had guessed right.

“You probably thought you’d be special, just because you were a virgin when you came to his bed. But you’re not. You never were.” Bending down, Shane tried to pat Serenity’s head, as if comforting a pet, and only laughed when Serenity slapped her hand away.

“I hate you,” Serenity whispered.

“I hate you, too,” Shane cooed.

Serenity slowly pushed herself up. “I’m leaving tomorrow.” Her voice was weak but determined. “And I’m never coming back here.”

“Go then,” Shane hissed, throwing everything to the wind in her rage. “Willem paid me to send you off, do you know? He thinks it’s awkward, having the two of you live in the same city. He’s grossed out at the idea that you might bump into each other and then you’d start begging him to…” She pretended to think. “Mm, let me see, what was it you said that morning?”

Serenity’s skin crawled. No. Her mind screamed the word out. She had never, never ever thought that her half-sister would have heard—

“Oh, now I remember.” Shane pretended to sniff. “Please, please wait. Please just tell me…”

Serenity wanted to cover her ears…but she didn’t. Somewhere in her heart, she realized that she needed to hear this, needed to accept once and for all that the Dutch billionaire she had loved was not the man she thought he was.

Shane was looking at her, a catty smile playing on her lips as she asked, “And what did he tell you then, my dear sister?” But she didn’t wait for Serenity to speak, answering her own question.

Serenity watched her half-sister’s lips move, but it was as if she was hearing Willem’s own voice speak the words. His beautifully cultured, strongly accented voice, a sound that made her ache with so much love in one second and then break her heart with so much ease in another.

That’s the problem, Ms. Raleigh. You thought I loved you.

It was Shane speaking the words in front of her but in her mind, it was the Dutch billionaire speaking, rejecting her all over again.

Slowly, wordlessly, Serenity turned her back on Shane and Melanie.

“I hope you don’t think we’ll ever let you come back,” Shane screamed. She didn’t think it was possible to hate Serenity more until that moment. Just looking at the younger woman made her sick.

She hated how dignified Serenity was still able to look and act, hated how without a word Serenity made Shane feel like she was the loser here when it was Serenity who had whored herself and tried to steal Willem from Shane.

Shane watched Serenity start to limp away, and the hatred just grew and grew.

Unable to stop herself, she rushed forward and kicked the back of Serenity’s injured knee. Behind her, she heard Melanie gasp but ignored it, her eyes glued on Serenity. She watched her younger sister fall with a gasp, but it was not enough to make her feel any less empty or cruel, and her hatred continued to grow.

Her mother tried to walk past her to help Serenity, but Shane quickly pulled the older woman back. “She’s a whore, mother,” she said harshly. “She’s used to being on her back.”

Serenity watched her stepmother and sister walk away as she forced her limbs to move. The moment the door closed, she allowed her tears to fall. There had been a tiny part of her that had always hoped, foolishly, that one day Shane and Melanie would love her.

But now she knew that it had been a stupid little dream, as silly as Shane said she had been, in thinking the Dutch billionaire would see her as someone special.

Now, it was time to accept that she was not special, never was, and never would be special enough for anyone to love.
