Chapter 16

P.M.S.

Prepare to meet Satan.

-Word to the wise

Bennett

“What the fuck is all this?” I asked Sam when he handed me a stack of envelopes that was over three inches thick.

He shrugged. “I don’t know. Something from Todd. He told me to give it…”

Both of us froze when the indicator on the computer started beeping.

That computer’s only use was to house the GPS and data for the cameras that were in everyone’s vehicles, as well as around the property.

Sam moved quickly, waking up the sleeping monitor and clicking buttons as fast as his big hands would allow him to do.

“Gladewater. What and who the fuck is in Gladewater?” He muttered.

“Lennox,” I said instantly. “Lennox is in Gladewater.” I swallowed thickly. “And she has Reagan with her.”

“There’s been an accident on eighty that she was involved in. Let’s move. Cheyenne!” Sam yelled. “Call Jack and tell him I need him. We’re gone!”

I wasn’t listening for the rest. Instead, I ran to my truck, hopped in, and accelerated out of the parking lot.

Thankful that I’d backed in like I always did for expedience.

An ingrained instinct that always had me doing it even if it was harder to do initially.

A quick getaway was always the way to go.

Sam followed behind me, but I didn’t spare him another glance as I roared through the streets of Kilgore, and straight to 42 that’d take me to 80 in about ten minutes.

It took me seven, thanks to my emergency lights that I had in my dash.

Something I had because I was always being called out for SWAT situations, and I needed to get there fast.

I was grateful that the traffic was cooperating with me, unlike how it usually did.

My heart, though, wasn’t being very cooperative.

It was trying to hammer its way out of my chest as I thought about my daughter and girlfriend being in an accident without me there to ascertain that it was no big deal.

My phone rang and I answered it immediately. “Lennox?”

“It’s me. I got in an accident with another motorist,” she said shakily.

“I know, honey. I’ll be there in about two minutes. Hang tight,” I told her softly.

She breathed a sigh of relief that I felt all the way through the phone line.

“Thanks. Just…hurry. Everyone’s okay, though,” she assured me hurriedly.

“Okay, baby. I’ll be there soon. I fucking love you,” I whispered fiercely.

She giggled a tad manically. “I fucking love you, too,” she whispered back.

Two long minutes later, I pulled up to the scene of a fucking mess, and none other than the bane of my existence in the middle of it all.

“What the fuck,” I breathed as I unlatched the door and hopped out, slamming the door as I hauled ass across the pavement to my little girl.

Lennox had her wrapped up in her arms, and they were both looking at what was left of Lennox’s car.

“What happened?” I asked in alarm.

Lennox, having not seen me pull up, jumped and turned to me, eyes wide.

Then, once realizing who it was, relaxed.

“Bennett,” she breathed.

“Daddy!” Reagan said, throwing herself at me.

“Sir,” a male said from behind me.

I turned to find a uniformed cop behind me.

He was surveying me, and my uniform that I’d yet to take off, as well as the badge at my hip. He wasn’t close enough to read the badge, though, which was why he asked what he did next.

“What department?” He inquired.

I didn’t pretend to misunderstand. “Kilgore PD.”

He nodded.

“This woman,” he said, pointing at Corrinne who was now glaring daggers at the four of us. “Is saying that this woman,” he pointed at Lennox. “Kidnapped her child, and had to wreck the car to get her to stop.”

My mouth dropped open. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”

The officer shook his head. “Nope.”

Lennox was visibly shaken, and I knew with every cell of my being that she wanted to beat the hell out of Corrinne.

Motherfucker, but I wanted to do that, too!

I’m a fucking cop. Cops shouldn’t have those types of thoughts, but damned if I wasn’t feeling homicidal right then.

Then the chickens started to dawn on my mind, and I looked around in horror.

“What the fuck?” I asked in surprise.

There were literally chickens everywhere. Thousands of them.

A tractor trailer that’d been carrying the birds was on its side, the wooden crates that’d been holding the chickens broken to pieces.

People were out of their cars herding the chickens into a makeshift barrier of sorts made out of orange construction mesh and construction cones.

Police were questioning drivers, and the driver of, I assumed, the truck was pointing at the car that I assumed was Corrinne’s and then gesturing wildly.

“What happened?” I asked Lennox.

Lennox pointed to Corrinne.

“She got right up on the bumper of my car and then rammed me. And not just a little tap, either. A major one. One that had me spinning out of control. Which was actually lucky for me because I hadn’t realized just how fast we’d been going to get the hell away from her crazy…butt. I spun out that way,” she gestured to where her car sat on the side of the road. “And Corrinne kept going through the intersection. Which had turned red. When she ran the light, she hit the chicken truck with such force that the whole thing fell over.”

Somewhat appeased, I dropped down to my haunches in front of Reagan.

“Is that what happened, baby?” I asked her.

She nodded. “That woman was screaming at Lennox like she was going to kill her. I was really scared, daddy.”

I leaned forward and tried to gather her into my arms, but she wouldn’t let Lennox go, so I ended up hugging Lennox with Reagan smashed in between us.

Lennox ran her hands along the back of my neck as she looked down on us, but I was too busy relearning to breathe now that I knew they were both alright.

“We have a video pulled up on what happened if you want to see it,” Sam rumbled from behind me.

I moved backwards until I could see Sam handing something over to the cop that was still right there watching our surroundings.

The cop took it, played the video, and watched it.

His eyes widened with each second that passed, and by the end of it, he was looking at Corrinne with such distaste that I almost felt bad for her.

Almost.

I stood, dropped a kiss on Reagan’s head, followed by Lennox’s, before I turned around and held my hand out for the phone.

Sam handed it to me without a word and I watched as Corrinne’s black sedan barreled at the back of Lennox’s car and rammed it with such force that the car turned sideways in a matter of seconds.

Once that happened, not much else could be seen but the spin of Lennox’s car as it was hit by car after car until it came to a rest on the side of the road directly next to the curb.

My eyes narrowed once I saw the end of the video, and I handed it over to Sam before walking calmly over to where Corrinne was sitting.

“Just stay with me, baby. Don’t look at her,” I heard Lennox whisper as I walked away.

I didn’t look back as I made my way to where Corrinne was now standing.

I didn’t say a word until I got within a few inches of her face, and what I said was not for anyone’s ears but hers.

“I’ll tell you this once, and once only. Don’t fuck with me. You almost killed my kid and my woman in one fell swoop, and had you succeeded in that, I’d have killed you. And it wouldn’t have been an easy death,” I growled viciously. “And if I find out that you’re within a square fucking mile of the two of them again, I swear by all that’s holy I will fucking ruin you.”

Corrinne’s eyes widened, and she looked to the cop that was at her side, but the cop was busy giving a report to the cop directly in front of her.

The traffic cop that dealt with accidents, I assumed.

But all of my focus was on Corrinne and the fact that she wasn’t comprehending what I was saying.

“Do you understand me, Corrinne?” I asked forcefully.

She swallowed thickly. “Y-yes.”

“Everything you hold dear will be gone. I won’t fucking rest until I know it’s all gone. Your life as you know it, gone. I’ll leave you alive long enough to make a recovery. It won’t be a pretty recovery, and your life will be hard for the rest of your existence, but you’ll be alive. You remember that the next time you try to fuck with my kid or my woman. Understand?” I hissed.

She nodded frantically. “Watch your back,” I said as I walked away, very aware of the way she narrowed her eyes at me as I left.

I knew she wouldn’t let this go, and I’d just issued her a challenge. But I wouldn’t rest until she was down, I promised myself.

No more nice Bennett.

In his place was a man trying to protect those he loved. And those I loved would stay alive if it was the last thing I did.

I made it up to Sam, and said, “She won’t stop. I need to get eyes on her. Do you think you can call a meeting for later tonight?” I asked.

Sam nodded. “Yeah. I’ll do that. Do you want the team, too?”

I nodded.

Yeah, the men on the SWAT team would always have my back, and I’d feel more comfortable with them being aware of what was going on.

I could use all the help I could get.

It was about to get nasty.

***

Later that night, after tucking Reagan into bed at my place, I walked into my bedroom to see Lennox on her hands and feet, ass in the air, doing what I assumed was the downward dog, a yoga position.

Her panties were spread perfectly over her sculpted ass as she rocked back and forth. Back and forth.

It put her ass in prime position for my viewing pleasure, and other pleasure as well.

After the day that I’d had, there was nothing else in this world that I wanted to do but get lost in Lennox’s body, which was why I had my shirt stripped off my in a matter of seconds.

“You think you could hold that position while I fucked you in it?” I asked casually from the doorway.

Lennox dropped her head until she was looking at me from between her legs.

“I could try,” she said silkily.

I admired her ass, before I rocked back from the door frame, grabbed a hold of the door, and shut it quietly before locking it.

The click was loud in the quiet room, and I enjoyed how Lennox seemed to quiver in anticipation as she rocked back on her heels.

When she went to drop to her knees, I placed my hands around her hips and pulled her back up as I pressed the hard length of my growing erection into her backside.

“Stay,” I ordered.

When she didn’t move, I hooked my hands around her panties and started to slowly lower them to the floor.

As I went down to my knees, straddling her legs, I sighed in pleasure.

I loved looking at Lennox.

Any part of her was easy on the eyes.

But the heat of her, the most succulent piece of flesh was nestled between her thighs, and already wet.

I could see the slickness glistening off the outer lips of her sex, and she clenched when I moved my hand up to run my thumb through the growing wetness.

“You’re already ready for me,” I observed, leaning forward to take a deep breath of her scent.

She gasped when my coarse beard hair met her inner thigh as she quivered in anticipation.

“Bennett,” she breathed. “My arms are going to fall off before you get on with it.”

I chuckled against her inner thigh, running my lips along the soft flesh.

“We can’t have that, can we?” I rasped against her skin before I stood to my full height.

The knit shorts I had around my hips dropped to the ground as soon as I pushed them off my hips, followed shortly by the boxer briefs.

Erection no longer confined, it bounced up to full mast, pointing straight to her pretty pussy as if it knew exactly where it wanted to go.

Fisting it as I stepped out of my shorts, I walked up behind Lennox, until the insides of my thighs touched the outsides of hers.

I worked my cock against the outsides of her lips, running the head up and down her sex, thoroughly saturating it with her juices.

“You know what I want to hear?” I asked, teasing her clit with my dick.

“No,” she panted. “What?”

I smiled and lined my cock up with her entrance before slowly starting to push inside.

“I want to hear the words,” I commanded, stopping when I was filling her half way.

“What words?” She asked, pressing back.

I stilled her hips, looking down to where we were connected, amazed that she could take all of me.

“The words you said to me in bed last night. I want to hear them,” I told her, pulling back until just the crest of my cock remained lodged inside her tight pussy.

She whimpered and said, “I fucking love you. Now please, give me your cock!”

Smiling, I gave her my cock.

Holding onto her hips, I snapped mine forward at the same time as I pulled hers back.

She screamed when my cock lodged fully inside of her, kissing the entrance to her womb.

She gasped, and her arms started to shake as I worked my length in and out of her, faster and faster.

Our skin slapping together filled the room as my ass cheeks clenched as I powered into her.

Each slap-slap had my balls swinging and smacking onto her clit, bringing her closer and closer to orgasm.

“Walk your feet together and lean back,” I ordered her. “There you go. Now bend over like you’re picking something up off the ground. Grab your ankles.”

She did, allowing me more movement to use her body as I liked.

“Feel okay?” I asked, knowing it was much deeper this way.

“Y-yes,” she whispered. “I’m so close. Oh, God!

Her legs gave out when her orgasm tore through her, and I grunted with the effort to hold her up while her sweet, hot, juicy pussy clamped down on my cock, effectively making it hard to think, let alone hold up Lennox’s weight.

Her dead weight.

“Oh, fuck,” I said, arms burning as she started to pulse around me.

Gasping, I came, my release shooting out of my cock and battering against her cervix in long, thick pulses.

“Fuck yes,” I grunted, abs tightening with each pulse.

Lennox must’ve finally come back online because her knees once again locked, taking her weight and allowing me to shoot the last dregs of my orgasm inside of her without thinking I was going to drop her.

“Jesus,” she breathed. “I was just trying to stretch.”

I chuckled and pulled out of her slowly, watching in fascination as my come started to seep out.

My thumb once again moved up to run over her pussy, slowly working it in to her overheated skin in large sweeps.

“I think you got it,” she laughed, standing.

I pulled her naked body against mine, running the palm of my hand down the front of her body to come to a rest at the apex of her thighs.

Leaning my head down and kissing her neck, I said, “I fucking love you, too.”

She laughed. “Damn straight.”

Letting her go, I walked to the bathroom and wet a cloth, bringing it to the door before I tossed it to her.

She caught it, but one of the wet ends swung up and slapped against her face, causing her to wince.

“Thanks,” she muttered dryly, wiping her cheek off on her shoulder.

“No problem,” I winked, walking back to the bathroom to wash my hands and clean my cock off.

I looked down, seeing the empty bottle she’d taken insulin from on the bathroom counter, and wondered if this would be my life now.

I’d have to get her one of those red boxes so she could hang it up and put her needles into it.

And I couldn’t say that bothered me.

Not even a little bit.

Once I was done, I brushed my teeth, used the restroom, and came out to the bedroom to find Lennox sprawled in the middle of the bed, head turned to the side watching me.

“Tired?” I asked, taking a seat on the side of the bed and running the palm of my hand down the middle of her t-shirt clad back.

“Exhausted,” she admitted. “Your ex saps all of my energy from me every time I’m within twenty feet of her.”

I snorted and rolled over her to my side, getting my feet under the covers and pulling her to me.

“My ex is a fuckin’ psycho,” I told her honestly. “And I’m sorry she’s in your life.”

She turned her head and stared at me.

“It’s not like you brought her into my life. I did that all on my own. It’s just a coincidence that we both hate her. And she hates us both,” she told me.

I grimaced.

“I feel sorry for the poor fuck who married that cunt,” I sighed, closing my eyes.

A grunt tore from my lips when Lennox half-heartedly punched me in the belly.

Uhh,” I ground out. “What was that for?”

“Don’t say the C-word. Yuck,” she said with disgust. “You shouldn’t be talking like that anyway. Not when you have kids.”

“I have a kid, singular,” I told her.

She punched me again. “Same thing.”

I shook my head. “So not the same thing. One is one. Two is more than one. I have one. Not more than one.”

She sighed and buried her face into the pillow. “You obviously couldn’t handle more than one, anyway. Not with your inability to not be stupid.”

I smacked her ass. “I could totally do more children…with you. Not with anyone else.”

Then what I’d said made her freeze, causing me to watch her warily.

Why the woman was so afraid of commitment was amazing to me.

Her parents were fucking married and had been for her entire life.

She’d had instances where men hadn’t treated her right, but that in no way, shape, or form should have made her so afraid.

“What’s with you and not being able to talk about your future?” I asked her after she continued to remain still.

She turned her head and shrugged.

“I don’t like being cheated on. I don’t like being left hanging. I don’t like being lied to repeatedly. And I don’t like being second best. Something that all of my previous boyfriends did. I’m not saying that you have, or will do, any of those things. It’s just hard to think past the hurt sometimes. A baby is a huge commitment. Even thinking about a baby gives me hives.”

“You do well with Reagan,” I told her, knowing for a fact that she had done just that.

She sighed.

“Reagan’s already her own person. I can’t screw her up any more than she already is,” she said. “A baby, though, depends on me. If you leave me, I’ll be alone taking care of a child all by myself. And I don’t know that I can do that.”

I gave her a look that clearly said, ‘you’re nuts.

“I’m raising a kid by myself. If anybody can do it, you can,” I told her. “And that’s not even going to happen, because I’d never let you go. You’re mine now. The only way you’d be able to leave was if I died and could no longer hold onto you.”

She blinked.

“That’s kind of morbid,” she admitted. “And really kind of nice.”

Yawning loudly, I reached over and pulled the chain on the lamp next to the bed, plunging the room into darkness.

“That’s good that you think so, since every bit of what I said was true. I’m yours and your mine. That’s it. No take backs,” I said sleepily.

She moved, burrowing into my body.

Instinctively, I wrapped my arms around her shoulders and pulled her into me, her feet finding their way to in between my calves as she liked to do every night.

“Bennett,” she said after a few long minutes.

“Hmm,” I asked, well on the way to dreamland.

“How many kids do you want?” She asked.

I ran my lips over the top of her head. “One. Two. Three. Whatever. I don’t really care. As long as you want to keep having them, I’ll keep planting them inside of you.”

She snorted. “How chivalrous of you. And are these babies going to be legitimate, or just fruits of your loins?”

I smiled, knowing I had her.

“Oh, if I have my way, they’ll be legitimate,” I informed her.

Her lips pressed against my bare chest.

“When do you plan on making them legitimate?” She continued.

I didn’t answer.

Mostly because my eyes were too heavy, and my mind was already shutting down.

Though I did think it.

Soon, Lennox. Very, very soon.

Chapter 17

I’m not funny. I’m mean and people think I’m joking.

-Lennox’s secret thoughts

Lennox

Legitimate.

He was going to make babies with me. Legitimate babies.

Babies.

Holy shit.

Babies had never been on my agenda before. Not with my hectic schedule.

With Bennett, though, I questioned nearly all of my old agenda.

I’d already taken a significant decrease in hours so I could spend more time with Bennett and Reagan.

While it hadn’t been on purpose, I still liked the outcome, and planned to keep it the way it was.

I liked it.

I got to see the two of them every night, and if anything happened and Bennett had to be called out, then I was there and Reagan never had to be woken up.

It’d been three weeks since the night Corrinne had wrecked me as I’d been driving home from work with Reagan in the car. And two weeks since I’d last seen her.

I’d gone to the police station, per Bennett’s request, to press charges against her for not only vandalizing my house, but also handing my phone number and other personal information to the rest of my neighborhood.

My parents and I had had to change our phone numbers due to the hundreds of calls a week I got.

Apparently, not only had she given my phone number out to the residents in my neighborhood, but she’d also placed an ad for ‘a good time’ on Craigslist and other dating websites with pictures she’d secretly taken of me.

That latest event had taken place about a week after she’d tried to run me off the road, and I was honestly tired of it. It was really putting a toll on my happiness, which I guess was what she’d been trying to accomplish.

Bennett hadn’t been doing well thanks to her, either.

Especially when Corrinne tried to accuse him of raping her nine years ago, then forcing her to give up rights to the baby he’d made with her as a consequence of said rape.

Everybody knew it was bogus, but Bennett was still getting weird looks from the citizens of Kilgore, and even some of his fellow cops who didn’t know him or how Corrinne was a lying, vindictive whore.

“Are you nervous?” I asked Bennett as we walked hand in hand into the courthouse.

He squeezed my hand slightly before shaking his head. “No. There’s no reason for her to get custody of Reagan. In fact, this is all just preliminary. The papers have already been signed, sealed, and dated. The only thing that happened was that it wasn’t filed through the state. It’s a done deal.”

Shockingly, we found out that it wasn’t a done deal less than an hour later when the judge’s gavel rang out like a shotgun blast shooting through the courtroom.

“Court dismissed,” the judge roared.

She had to roar because everyone on Bennett’s side of the courtroom was screaming in outrage.

The only two not screaming were Bennett and Todd.

Bennett looked like someone had knocked him over the back of the head with a crowbar.

Todd, Bennett’s badass lawyer, looked deadly quiet.

In fact, if I didn’t know any better, I would’ve said he was plotting murder.

Corrinne, the fucking bitch, was sitting across the aisle from us with a smile the size of Texas on her face, and I wanted nothing more than to slap the stupid bitch across that big mouth of hers.

I was seething mad, and if looks could kill, Corrinne would be a puddle of brain matter, blood, and guts on the floor.

Her husband, Buck, the spineless bastard, sat in his seat looking like he’d just been beaten with the same crowbar that’d taken out Bennett.

He was looking down at his hands that were twisting in his lap, and I couldn’t figure out what the hell he was doing with her.

I couldn’t figure it out when I was in college, either. Which was why I’d been accused of cheating with him in the first place. I’d been trying to save him, and look where that’d gotten me!

“I can’t believe she gave her partial custody,” Payton breathed beside me. “She’s going to kill her.”

“She won’t get her,” Max mumbled from her other side. “The boys and I…we’ll make fucking sure of it. She won’t touch another hair on that baby’s head.”

No, she wouldn’t.

I’d make sure of it.

I didn’t know how, or when, but I’d make sure of it.

Even if I had to kill the bitch.

I’d do it for Bennett and Reagan.

Okay, I probably wouldn’t kill her. But I’d maim her.

“Did she pay the judge off?” Shiloh asked softly. “Why would any sane person do that? She has tons and tons of evidence in front of her. Seriously, either that judge is mentally challenged, or she was paid off. There’s no other reason for what she’s done.”

I agreed.

One hundred and ninety percent.

“Everyone leaves a trail,” James said cryptically.

“Bennett,” Michael said, standing behind him. “Let’s go. We’ll get home, figure this all out.”

Bennett stood, not looking at anyone, and left without looking back.

My heart ached.

And it really ached when I got to the parking lot to see Bennett gone.

“Shit,” I murmured.

Everyone got on their bikes, or into their prospective cars, and started motoring away, and I was left alone before I even realized that I needed a ride.

So I called a cab and had the driver take me to Bennett’s.

Only when I got there, it was only for Bennett to meet me at the door with a frown.

“I need some time to talk to her. Alone,” he murmured, eyes void of any emotion.

I nodded.

“Okay,” I nodded. “I’ll just leave you alone. Call me when you want me to come back over?”

He nodded. “Thanks, Lennox.”

Not Nox like he’d been calling me for the last couple of weeks.

Lennox.

My heart hurt for him as I watched him close the door on me, and ached even more as I started the long walk home.

I didn’t call a cab this time, instead settling on a long walk in hopes of clearing my brain of the cobwebs and any lingering doubts that my brain was trying to shove upon me.

But I couldn’t shake them.

Had I been the one to bring this all on Bennett?

Would Corrinne have pursued this had I not been in the picture?

She hated me. Seriously hated me.

For something I’d never even done, but she’d thought I’d done, nonetheless.

Did he blame me?

By the time I’d gotten home, I’d worked myself into a major depression.

All the assurances that Bennett didn’t blame me, from his own mouth no less, were now gone.

In their place were disturbed thoughts.

Ones that wouldn’t go anywhere.

That’d stay and fester if Bennett didn’t banish them.

But he didn’t banish them.

He was gone.

And had no plans of ever coming back.
